The British government took direct control of coastal and inland territories that would become the base for building a railway from the Indian Ocean toward the interior. This political change helped turn earlier private-company influence into formal colonial administration. It set the stage for large public works meant to secure strategic routes and expand commerce.
To build quickly and meet technical needs, the railway relied heavily on hired labor from British India, alongside African workers. Over the construction period, tens of thousands of Indian laborers worked on the line, and some later settled in East Africa. This labor system shaped the region’s workforce, communities, and politics long after the track was finished.
Construction began at the port city of Mombasa, the main entry point for imported rails, locomotives, and other supplies. Starting at the coast made it possible to move materials inland as the track advanced. This was the practical beginning of a project later nicknamed the “Lunatic Line” because of its cost and hardships.
In the House of Commons, MPs argued over whether a long railway from Mombasa inland was worth the cost and risk. These debates show the project was controversial from the start, with critics questioning cost estimates and expected traffic. Supporters treated the line as a strategic investment for imperial control and supply.
As crews built a bridge over the Tsavo River, a pair of lions repeatedly attacked workers’ camps. The killings caused fear and disrupted progress, becoming one of the most famous crises of the construction period. The episode also highlighted how disease, wildlife, and harsh conditions made the project dangerous and expensive.
After months of attacks, the two lions were shot in December 1898, allowing construction in the area to restart more reliably. The incident became part of the railway’s public image in Britain and beyond. It also contributed to the wider narrative that the line was being built through extreme hazards.
When the track reached the Nairobi area, the railway established a major depot and operating base on the route. What began as a construction camp grew into a permanent settlement tied to railway administration, workshops, and supply. This was a turning point where the railway directly shaped new urban growth in the interior.
The line pushed into the highlands and toward the Rift Valley zone, where grades and terrain made construction slower and more costly. Reaching Nakuru marked progress into a region that later became central to settler agriculture and colonial administration. It also shows how the railway’s route influenced where future economic activity concentrated.
By 1900, parliamentary discussion focused on what the partly built railway could already do—such as moving government stores more cheaply than porter transport. These arguments were used to justify continuing spending despite criticism. The debate shows how construction and early operations were politically linked, with the railway framed as a tool of administration as well as commerce.
In December 1901 the track reached the Lake Victoria shore at Port Florence (later Kisumu), completing the core Mombasa-to-lake railway. This created a faster coast-to-lake corridor for officials, troops, missionaries, and trade goods, replacing much slower caravan routes. The completed line became a major infrastructure backbone for British control in East Africa.
With rail at the lake, the project’s purpose depended on boats to move people and cargo across Lake Victoria toward Uganda, including to Entebbe. Kisumu developed as a port and rail terminus, linking rail schedules with marine services. This combined rail-and-steamer system turned the railway into a regional transport network rather than a single line.
By the end of construction, the railway had reshaped settlement and power: Nairobi grew from a rail camp into an administrative center, and Kisumu expanded as a lake port. The line made it easier for the colonial state to move supplies and personnel inland, strengthening control over the protectorates and trade routes. These outcomes marked the railway’s lasting role as both an economic corridor and a tool of colonial governance.
