In 1881, the Sudanese religious leader Muḥammad Aḥmad declared himself the Mahdi (“divinely guided one”), launching a movement that challenged Egyptian rule in Sudan. This uprising created a growing security crisis along the Nile that would later draw Britain into fighting in the Sudan.
From July 11–13, 1882, British naval forces bombarded Alexandria during the crisis caused by the ʿUrabi movement in Egypt. The attack marked a decisive shift from diplomatic pressure to open military intervention, aimed at protecting British strategic and financial interests, including the Suez Canal route.
On September 13, 1882, British troops defeated the main Egyptian army under Ahmed ʿUrabi at Tel el-Kebir. The victory broke organized resistance and enabled Britain to establish a long-term occupation of Egypt, which became the base for later campaigns up the Nile into Sudan.
In early November 1883, Mahdist forces defeated an Egyptian-led army under Hicks Pasha near Shaykan in Kordofan. The loss weakened Egyptian control in Sudan and helped set the stage for a high-profile struggle over Khartoum and the Nile corridor.
On March 13, 1884, Mahdist forces began besieging Khartoum, where an Egyptian garrison was commanded by British general Charles Gordon. The siege turned Sudan into a major British political issue and linked Britain’s Egypt occupation to events deeper in Africa.
On January 26, 1885, Mahdist forces captured Khartoum, ending the siege and killing Gordon and many defenders. The fall of the city shocked British public opinion and led Britain to rethink how (and when) it would return militarily to the Sudan.
On October 29, 1888, major European powers and the Ottoman Empire signed the Convention of Constantinople, declaring the Suez Canal should remain open to ships of all nations in peace and war. Even with formal rules, Britain’s position in Egypt helped it protect the canal’s security in practice.
In March 1896, Anglo-Egyptian forces began a renewed push up the Nile from Wadi Halfa, starting the campaign that would later be called the Anglo-Egyptian conquest of Sudan. The strategy relied on carefully prepared supply lines and river movement to reduce the Mahdists’ control step by step.
On June 7, 1896, Kitchener’s forces won at Ferkeh (Firket), a key early victory in the reconquest. Successes like this helped secure northern Sudan and supported the later occupation of Dongola as a forward base.
In September 1896, Kitchener’s army entered and occupied Dongola, strengthening control of the Nile route in northern Sudan. Holding Dongola improved logistics and made it easier to push farther south toward the Mahdist center around Omdurman and Khartoum.
On August 7, 1897, Anglo-Egyptian troops captured Abu Hamed, a strategically important point for movement across the Nubian Desert and along the Nile. This helped enable a faster advance and supported the building and protection of supply routes for the final offensive.
On April 8, 1898, Kitchener’s forces defeated a large Mahdist force at the Atbara River. The battle reduced Mahdist fighting strength and removed a key barrier to the final march on Omdurman and Khartoum.
From July 10 to November 3, 1898, British and French forces confronted each other at Fashoda on the Upper Nile in a major imperial dispute. France ultimately withdrew, and the crisis helped confirm Britain’s dominant position in the Nile valley during the wider Scramble for Africa.
On September 2, 1898, Anglo-Egyptian forces decisively defeated the Mahdist army at Omdurman (also called Karari). The victory enabled the reoccupation of Khartoum and marked the practical end of the Mahdist state as a governing power.
In 1899, Britain and Egypt created the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium to govern Sudan, formally presenting it as joint rule while giving Britain decisive control in practice. This arrangement turned the military reconquest into a lasting colonial administration and reshaped governance in Sudan for decades.
In late November 1899, Anglo-Egyptian forces defeated the remaining Mahdist forces at Umm Diwaykarat, and the Mahdist leader ʿAbd Allāh (the Khalifa) was killed in the fighting. This final defeat closed the main phase of British conquest in Sudan and secured the new colonial order created after Omdurman.
