Spanish royal policy in the early 1600s created a legal pathway for missions to gather ("reduce") dispersed Indigenous communities into planned towns under church oversight. In 1609, an important royal authorization helped formalize this approach in the Province of Paraguay. This opened the door for the large Jesuit-Guaraní mission network that followed.
Jesuit missionaries founded San Ignacio Guazú on December 29, 1609, with support from local Guaraní leadership. It became a key early center for organizing later mission towns. This marks the practical beginning of the Jesuit reductions in what is now Paraguay.
After the first foundations, Jesuits and Guaraní communities established more reductions along major rivers such as the Paraná. These towns aimed to organize labor, worship, and governance in one place while keeping some separation from Spanish colonial settlements. The expanding network also became a frontier system in a contested borderland.
From 1628, slave-raiding expeditions (bandeiras) from São Paulo increasingly targeted Guaraní communities, including those gathered in reductions. The concentrated population in mission towns made raids easier and more devastating. This violence became a major driver of later relocations and militarization.
On November 15, 1628, Jesuit missionary Roque González de Santa Cruz was killed at the mission of Todos los Santos de Caaró. His death is often linked to resistance and tensions surrounding mission expansion and local power struggles. The episode shows that conflict could come not only from outside raiders but also from internal opposition.
As raids escalated, many mission settlements in the Guayrá region were destroyed or abandoned. Between 1631 and 1638, surviving mission residents—about 12,000 people—were moved roughly 500 km into areas under stronger Spanish control. This relocation reshaped the geography of the reductions and concentrated them farther south and west.
On March 11, 1641, Jesuit-allied Guaraní forces defeated bandeirantes at the Battle of Mbororé. The victory helped reduce the immediate threat of large-scale slave raids against the mission towns. It also signaled a turning point toward stronger organized defense for the reductions.
By 1732, the Jesuit Río de la Plata mission system reached its highest recorded population—about 141,182 people—spread across 30 missions in areas now in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil. This peak reflects decades of mission growth, agricultural production, and social organization. After this high point, the system faced new pressures, including disease, politics, and border disputes.
Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Madrid on January 13, 1750, trying to settle South American borders using the idea that control on the ground should shape legal boundaries. The treaty required transferring the "Seven Missions" (Misiones Orientales) east of the Uruguay River to Portugal and relocating their Guaraní residents. This diplomatic change put mission communities at the center of a major international border decision.
From July 1754 to February 1756, Guaraní resistance to forced relocation led to the Guaraní War, fought against joint Spanish and Portuguese forces. The conflict ended with Spanish–Portuguese victory and the fall of the Seven Missions involved. The war weakened the political position of the mission system and increased suspicion of Jesuit influence.
On February 27, 1767, King Charles III of Spain signed orders to expel Jesuits from Spanish territories. The decision reflected wider Bourbon-era efforts to centralize power and curb institutions viewed as too independent. For the reductions, it meant their long-standing administrators were about to be removed by state force.
In the Guaraní mission region, the expulsion decree was implemented in 1768 under Governor Francisco de Bucareli. This ended roughly a century and a half of Jesuit administration and forced a new governance model separating civil authority from religious oversight. The reductions continued to exist, but their institutional system changed sharply after Jesuit removal.
