In the 2nd century CE, the Kushan Empire supported Buddhism across a wide region that connected South and Central Asia. This political backing helped make large stupas (dome-shaped relic monuments) and monasteries highly visible along Silk Road routes. It set the stage for Buddhist architecture and reliquaries to spread and be reworked in Central Asian settings.
At Kara Tepe near Termez (in today’s southern Uzbekistan), early Buddhist structures date to around the 1st century CE, with major building activity under the Kushans. The site mixes rock-cut spaces with above-ground brick architecture, showing how monasteries adapted to local terrain and materials. Small stupas and monastic cells supported both worship and residential life for monks.
A gilded copper reliquary now known as the Kanishka casket is often dated to 127 CE and was found in the relic deposit associated with Kanishka’s stupa. Reliquaries like this mattered because they linked worship to physical relics (believed remains) of the Buddha and important saints. Their imagery and inscriptions also show how Central Asian, Iranian, and Greco-Roman artistic elements could be combined in Buddhist sacred objects.
During the 2nd century CE, a major stupa associated with the Kushan ruler Kanishka was built at Shah-ji-ki-Dheri near Peshawar. Its scale and prominence show how stupas could serve as both sacred reliquary structures and public symbols of royal support for Buddhism. This Gandharan model influenced later stupa and monastery designs farther north and east.
Fayaz Tepe, also near Termez, is a Buddhist monastery complex with much of its remains dating to roughly the 1st–3rd centuries CE. Its plan includes religious spaces and residential areas, reflecting how monasteries functioned as organized communities, not just shrines. The site helps show how the stupa-and-vihara (monastery) pattern spread beyond Gandhara into Bactria and neighboring regions.
From about the 3rd to 8th centuries CE, the Kizil Caves near Kucha (Kuqa) developed into one of the earliest large Buddhist cave-temple complexes in what is now China. The caves’ planned spaces, murals, and sculpture programs show how Buddhist worship was reorganized for cave settings, including circumambulation (ritual walking) around central structures. Kizil’s styles and layouts became important references for later cave-temple traditions farther east.
Beginning in 366 CE, the Mogao Caves at Dunhuang developed into a large cave complex that connected Central Asian and Chinese Buddhist art worlds. Over the following centuries, new caves were added under different dynasties, reflecting long-term investment in cave sanctuaries. This helped create a durable eastern anchor for Silk Road Buddhist architecture, combining mural programs, sculpture, and donor-funded chapels.
In the Bamiyan Valley, Buddhist monasteries and sanctuaries developed over centuries as part of a major Silk Road stopping place. UNESCO notes that caves along the Bamiyan cliffs include monastic spaces and chapels dating from the 3rd to 5th centuries CE, showing a mature cliff-based monastic landscape. This environment supported large-scale devotional art and later monumental sculpture traditions in the region.
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves near Turpan formed a long-lived cave complex, with major phases from the 5th century onward and many surviving caves dating later. As oasis-based sanctuaries, they illustrate how monastic and devotional spaces could cluster near trade towns, serving travelers and local patrons. Their murals and layouts show ongoing exchange among Central Asian, Iranian, and Chinese artistic traditions along the Silk Road.
In the Chuy Valley region (today Kyrgyzstan), Silk Road towns such as the settlement near Krasnaya Rechka (Navekat) were active from about the 6th to 12th centuries and have yielded Buddhist remains. This indicates that Buddhist temples and images were not limited to major southern hubs like Bactria or Kucha, but also reached northern trade corridors. These sites help close the story of 2nd–9th century architectural transmission by showing how far Buddhist building and image-making traveled with commerce and migration.
In the 7th century CE, the Chinese monk Xuanzang traveled through Central and South Asia and wrote detailed accounts of Buddhist sites. His descriptions of numerous monasteries and stupas show that large monastic complexes were still active and well supported in many regions. These records also help explain how pilgrim travel reinforced architectural ideas, such as standardized worship halls and relic monuments, across long distances.
Ajina Tepe in southern Tajikistan dates to the 7th–8th centuries CE and preserves a planned monastery with courtyards, worship spaces, and stupas. UNESCO describes it as an earthen (mud-brick) site, showing how Buddhist architecture adapted to local building materials while keeping recognizable monastic organization. The site’s sculpture and wall painting remains point to continued Buddhist artistic production in Central Asia during this period.
