This matters because stable political control helped ports tax, protect, and organize long-distance shipping. The Great Chaitya hall at Karla (in today’s Maharashtra) was built around the 1st century CE and sits near an important inland trade corridor from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan. Donor inscriptions include many merchants, showing how commercial wealth helped fund Buddhist sacred architecture. Such sites formed a “land-to-sea” chain linking inland routes to ports like Sopara and the Gujarat coast.
Arikamedu (near modern Puducherry) provides archaeological evidence—such as amphora fragments, beads, and other finds—of trade connections spanning many centuries. Although his route emphasizes the Bay of Bengal, it confirms a larger 7th-century pattern: monks and merchants used ocean routes as part of Buddhist expansion networks.
By the 7th–8th centuries, political and commercial power around the western Indian Ocean increasingly shifted as Islamic polities expanded along Arabian coasts and beyond. Major trade routes continued, but key nodes, languages, and legal frameworks for maritime commerce changed.
