First Mogao cave founded at Dunhuang
Labels: Le Zun, Mogao Cave, Dunhuang OasisIn 366 CE, the first cave shrine was begun at the Mogao cliff near the Dunhuang oasis, a key stop on Silk Road routes. Tradition links the founding to the monk Le Zun, and later building expanded the site into a large Buddhist sanctuary. This start point matters because it created a durable religious community and a physical hub for pilgrims, patrons, and artists moving between China and Central Asia.
