In 640, Tang forces conquered Gaochang (near modern Turpan) and replaced it with a Tang prefecture (Xi Prefecture). This created a stable administrative base at the eastern edge of the Tarim Basin, where officials could support travel, trade, and Buddhist communities moving along the Silk Road. It also set up the state infrastructure that later supported Tang rule deeper in the Western Regions.
In 640, the Tang established the Anxi Protectorate (Protectorate General to Pacify the West) to control and administer the Western Regions. Based first at Xi Prefecture, it coordinated military defense and civil administration across oasis states connected by Silk Road routes. This protectorate created a framework in which Buddhist monasteries and travelers interacted with Tang officials as part of everyday governance.
In 645, the monk Xuanzang returned to the Tang capital after traveling through Central Asia to India. He brought back many Buddhist texts and helped make the Western Regions a concrete focus of Tang knowledge, diplomacy, and religious interest. His reports and translations also shaped how Tang officials and elites understood Buddhism and the Silk Road.
After Tang forces took Kucha in 648, the Anxi Protectorate headquarters was moved there. Kucha was a long-standing Buddhist center in the northern Tarim Basin, and placing Tang administration there helped connect state power with major monastery networks and Silk Road traffic. The move also signaled the Tang goal of governing key oasis hubs rather than only holding border outposts.
By about 658, the Tang consolidated control of the Tarim Basin through the Four Garrisons of Anxi (notably at Kucha, Khotan, Kashgar, and Karashahr). These garrisons supported policing, taxation, and the movement of officials and supplies across long distances. For Buddhist expansion, they helped keep routes open for pilgrims, translators, and donors moving between China and Central Asia.
In 670, a Tibetan invasion pushed Tang forces out of parts of the Tarim Basin, disrupting Anxi’s administration and garrison system. This shift reduced Tang ability to protect Silk Road travel and weakened direct state support for Buddhist institutions tied to Tang officials. It also began a long period in which control of oasis states changed hands repeatedly.
In 692, Tang forces reconquered the Four Garrisons of Anxi, restoring Tang administration to key Tarim Basin centers. Regaining these nodes mattered because they were the practical infrastructure for imperial communication, supply lines, and regulated movement of people. For Buddhism, it helped renew official protection and patronage in a region where monasteries served as cultural and economic institutions.
In 751, Tang forces fought the Abbasids and their allies at the Battle of Talas and were defeated. The battle is often linked to a reduced Tang presence in parts of Central Asia west of the Tarim Basin, even though scholars debate how immediate the strategic impact was. Either way, it highlighted that Tang power in the far west depended on long supply lines and fragile alliances.
From 755 to 763, the An Lushan Rebellion consumed Tang resources and forced the state to prioritize survival in the Chinese heartland. Frontier troops and funds were often diverted away from the Western Regions, undermining the ability of protectorates and garrisons to function. This political crisis set the stage for further loss of Tang influence along Silk Road routes used by Buddhist travelers and communities.
In the late 760s, the Tibetan Empire took key parts of the Hexi (Gansu) Corridor, the main route linking Chang’an to the Western Regions. Once this corridor was disrupted, the Four Garrisons and Anxi administration became harder to supply and reinforce. This isolation weakened Tang political patronage of Buddhism in the Western Regions because state power could no longer reliably support the institutions and routes it had helped stabilize.
In 781, the Tibetan Empire took Dunhuang, an important gateway town between the Gansu Corridor and the Tarim Basin. Under Tibetan rule, Buddhist activity continued strongly, including large-scale copying and translation of texts, but it now operated under a different state system than Tang administration. The change shows how political patrons shaped Buddhist institutions along the Silk Road by controlling the places where travelers, scribes, and donors gathered.
By about 790, Tang control of the Tarim Basin was effectively lost, and the Anxi Protectorate’s authority collapsed as Tibetan power dominated key oasis centers. This marked a major turning point: Tang political patronage and administration could no longer reliably protect or fund Buddhist institutions across the Western Regions. Buddhist life along the Silk Road continued, but under new patrons and with weaker direct links to Tang state structures.
From 840 to 845, Emperor Wuzong ordered the Huichang persecution, targeting Buddhist institutions and other religions that officials labeled as foreign. The policy reduced monasteries and confiscated property, changing how Buddhism was organized and funded inside Tang-controlled areas. Even though Tang authority in the Western Regions was already badly weakened, the persecution affected the broader system of state-recognized Buddhism that had once supported trans-regional exchange.
In 848, Zhang Yichao led a rebellion that expelled Tibetan rule from Dunhuang as the Tibetan Empire weakened. The result was the Guiyi Circuit (Guiyijun), a locally governed regime that maintained links to Chinese culture and Buddhism without full Tang frontier power. This closing phase shows a new end state for Silk Road Buddhism: survival through local patrons and regional administration after the Tang protectorate system had broken down.
