Tang conquers Gaochang and creates Xi Prefecture
Labels: Gaochang, Xi PrefectureIn 640, Tang forces conquered Gaochang (near modern Turpan) and replaced it with a Tang prefecture (Xi Prefecture). This created a stable administrative base at the eastern edge of the Tarim Basin, where officials could support travel, trade, and Buddhist communities moving along the Silk Road.
