Mokone forms Ethiopian Church in Pretoria
Labels: Mangena Maake, Ethiopian Church, PretoriaIn November 1892, Mangena Maake Mokone broke with the Wesleyan Methodist Church after years of racial discrimination in church governance. He organized the Ethiopian Church in Pretoria, using Psalm 68:31 (“Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God”) to express a goal of African-led Christian self-government. This helped launch “Ethiopianism,” a key stream of African Independent Churches (AICs) in Southern Africa.
