Serampore Mission Press begins operations
Labels: Serampore Mission, William Carey, Mission PressBaptist missionaries William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward began a printing press at Serampore (then under Danish rule). The press quickly became a major producer of Christian texts, translations, and schoolbooks in Indian languages, linking missionary work to education and publishing. This early base mattered because the East India Company was still wary of missionary activity in many of its territories.
