New England Congregationalists formed the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), one of the first major U.S. organizations dedicated to overseas Protestant missions. This created the funding and leadership structure that later supported long-term work in the Ottoman Empire, including missions, printing, and schools.
The ABCFM’s prudential committee issued formal instructions to Levi Parsons and Pliny Fisk, assigning them to a mission connected to Palestine and the eastern Mediterranean. This step matters because it set the Board’s first sustained pathway into Ottoman lands, beginning with reconnaissance, language study, and Bible distribution.
Parsons and Fisk reached Smyrna (İzmir), an important Ottoman port city, and began what is often described as the first American Protestant mission effort in the region. Smyrna became an early base for travel, reporting, and contact with local Jewish and Christian communities—activities that shaped later, larger ABCFM plans.
ABCFM missionary Cyrus Hamlin helped establish Bebek Seminary outside Constantinople to educate and train students, especially among Armenian communities. The seminary shows the Board’s shift from short exploratory travel to institutional work—schools that combined education with religious goals.
An Armenian Protestant congregation was formally organized in Constantinople (Istanbul). This event marked a durable local base for evangelical Protestant life inside the empire and became a key community linked to later ABCFM schools, publishing, and church networks.
An imperial decree recognized Protestants as a distinct religious community (millet) within the Ottoman system. This mattered because it provided a clearer legal framework for Protestant subjects—important for church organization, record-keeping, and reducing dependence on other communal authorities.
ABCFM work expanded into central Anatolia, with Kayseri becoming an early, organized center. Stations like Kayseri supported preaching, schooling, and local networks, reflecting a broader move from coastal entry points to inland communities across Ottoman Turkey.
The Ottoman Reform Edict (Islahat Fermânı) promised greater equality in areas such as education, public employment, and justice, regardless of religion. While implementation varied, the decree formed part of the legal and political environment in which missionary schools and hospitals operated and negotiated permissions.
The educational work associated with the Bebek seminary was transferred to Merzifon in north-central Anatolia. This relocation helped anchor a long-lived educational complex in the interior and set the stage for a college that would later become a major ABCFM-linked institution.
The ABCFM opened a girls’ boarding school at Bahçecik near İzmit, reflecting a widening focus on female education. Over time, such schools became important parts of the Board’s presence, producing graduates who participated in teaching, church life, and professional work.
Anatolia College was founded at Merzifon, expanding the earlier seminary into a broader liberal-arts-style institution. It served mainly Greek and Armenian students and became a central example of how the ABCFM combined education, language training, and Protestant community-building in Ottoman Turkey.
During World War I, mass deportations and killings of Armenians destroyed many communities that had formed the core constituency for numerous ABCFM-linked schools, churches, and medical work. Missionaries became major foreign eyewitnesses and redirected many facilities toward emergency relief, including care for orphans and refugees.
The Treaty of Lausanne, signed in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence, recognized the boundaries of the modern Republic of Turkey. The new political settlement accelerated major changes affecting foreign institutions, including mission schools and property, as the Ottoman imperial framework ended.
Anatolia College in Merzifon ceased operations in Turkey in the early postwar period, after years of disruption and violence. Its closure illustrates the broader contraction of ABCFM educational work in Anatolia as the region’s demographic and political realities changed after World War I.
