Samuel Ajayi Crowther was consecrated an Anglican bishop with responsibility for work along the Niger. His leadership symbolized an early CMS strategy: building a self-sustaining West African church with African clergy and teachers. This wider Niger mission later provided the institutional base and experience for CMS expansion toward Northern Nigeria.
The CMS established a station at Lokoja, a major river junction that became a key gateway from the coast into Nigeria’s interior. This helped the mission develop inland travel routes, language work, and local Christian communities. Over time, Lokoja also became linked to the mission’s later attempts to reach Hausa- and Fulani-speaking areas farther north.
In a published report, Crowther described Lokoja as one of the main stations of the Niger Mission alongside Onitsha and Akassa. Such reports helped CMS supporters understand the mission’s geography and needs, and they reinforced Lokoja’s importance for inland outreach. These mission networks mattered later when CMS leaders planned new work in Northern Nigeria.
On this date Britain proclaimed the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria after taking over territories previously administered by the Royal Niger Company. The new political framework reshaped travel, security, and governance across the north. It also created the environment in which mission work would be negotiated with colonial officials and Muslim emirates.
CMS records began distinguishing northern work within the Niger mission as the “Hausaland mission,” marking a more intentional focus on Northern Nigeria’s Hausa-speaking region. This shift reflected both opportunity and constraint: the mission wanted to expand northward, but access often depended on permissions from emirs and cautious colonial administrators. The label also shows how CMS framed the north as a distinct mission field.
Dr. Walter Miller established a CMS station at Ghirku (near Zaria), combining evangelism with basic medical care. The station’s existence became significant when British administration expanded: officials such as Frederick Lugard were reluctant to force a closure of a mission that was already in place. Miller’s Hausa-language work also positioned the mission to engage local communities beyond the coastal regions.
The colonial administration moved its operational headquarters to Zungeru, chosen partly for river access and strategic position. This shift mattered for CMS because mission travel, security, and permissions were increasingly shaped by the new colonial center. It also reflected the deeper entanglement of mission plans with the changing structures of British rule in the north.
CMS opened a station at Bida, expanding its northern footprint beyond earlier riverine and middle-belt footholds. The station became part of a chain of posts intended to support travel, schooling, and local Christian communities. In practice, such stations also highlighted a key tension: CMS expansion depended on local political permission and could be limited by fear of destabilizing emirate rule.
British forces captured Kano during the larger “pacification” campaign against the Sokoto Caliphate and its emirates. The conquest changed the balance of power in the region and increased British leverage over local rulers. For the CMS, this new political order influenced where missionaries could travel and how openly they could work among largely Muslim populations.

This turning point weakened the political-religious structure that had governed much of Northern Nigeria for decades. CMS listed Zaria as a main station beginning in 1905, reflecting the city’s importance as a northern political and commercial center. Work in and around Zaria was closely watched, and over time it encouraged the pattern of locating mission compounds slightly outside city walls when requested by local authorities. This helped the mission continue operating while reducing direct pressure on the emirate’s core institutions.
A Cambridge University Missionary Party began work at stations including Panyam, Kabwir, and Per in 1907. These efforts broadened the overall Protestant mission presence in Northern Nigeria and interacted with CMS networks and experience. The stations also show how “Northern Nigeria mission” work was not one single project, but an evolving set of linked initiatives across different peoples and regions.
Britain merged the Northern and Southern Nigeria protectorates (and Lagos Colony) into a single Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. This changed the political framework in which missions operated, with administration increasingly coordinated at a national level. For the CMS in Northern Nigeria, 1914 marks a clear transition point: the early “protectorate-era” phase of mission work gave way to new structures, policies, and debates about religion and education under a unified colonial state.
