Underwood founded Saemoonan Church in Seoul, often described as the first organized Presbyterian church in Korea. Saemoonan later became influential as a “mother church” for Korean Protestant leadership and expansion.
Samuel Austin Moffett began long-term Presbyterian mission work in Pyongyang, a major city in Korea’s northwest. The Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. formally established Korean mission work with additional appointed co-workers, moving beyond a small pioneering presence. A major revival movement in and around Pyongyang helped accelerate Protestant church growth and public interest in Christianity. For Presbyterians, the revival strengthened congregations, increased demand for trained pastors, and encouraged wider evangelism. The movement also influenced Korean church culture by emphasizing repentance, prayer, and active lay participation.
The Presbytery of All Korea (often called the “Dok Presbytery”) was established, marking a major step toward Korean self-governance in Presbyterian church life. It reduced direct missionary control by reorganizing authority around a Korean-led presbytery structure. This was a turning point from mission-led administration toward an indigenous Presbyterian denomination.
The first complete Bible in Korean was published, building on decades of translation and revision work. A full Bible in the local language supported preaching, literacy, and church education across regions, including among new believers outside major cities. This publication strengthened the long-term independence of Korean churches by reducing reliance on foreign-language materials.
After Japan annexed Korea in 1910, colonial authorities arrested hundreds of Koreans—many of them Christians—in what became known as the 105-Man Incident. By the late 1920s, Korean Presbyterian governance (presbyteries and the General Assembly) and Korean-trained clergy were central to church life, even as missionary boards remained influential in funding and institutions. The period closed with a more established, nationwide Presbyterian church that had its own leadership pipeline, Bible resources, and governing structures. This end state set the conditions for new challenges in the 1930s under intensified Japanese colonial policies.
