Jesuit priest Matteo Ricci (Li Madou) was allowed to settle in Beijing, a rare privilege for a European at the Ming court. He used Western mathematics, astronomy, and cartography to build trust with scholars and officials while presenting Christianity in a Confucian-friendly way. This “accommodation” approach shaped later arguments over whether Chinese ritual practices were cultural or religious.
Ricci published The True Meaning of the Lord of Heaven (Tianzhu shiyi), one of the best-known early Catholic texts written for Chinese educated readers. It tried to explain Christian teaching using concepts familiar in Confucian moral philosophy. The book became a key example of the Jesuit strategy that later opponents said went too far in adapting to local culture.
Ricci died in Beijing after decades of work building a network among scholars and officials. After his death, Jesuit leaders and other Catholic orders disagreed more openly about whether honoring Confucius and ancestors could be allowed for Christian converts. These disputes helped set the stage for the larger “Rites Controversy.”
In 1616, officials in Nanjing accused Catholic missionaries of harming Chinese social order and disrespecting Chinese customs. Several Jesuits were arrested or expelled from key cities, and public missionary activity was restricted for years. The incident showed how quickly political support could shift against the mission when cultural tensions rose.
Dominican missionary Juan Bautista de Morales argued that some practices tolerated by Jesuits—especially rites for ancestors and Confucius—were incompatible with Christian worship. He carried the dispute to Rome, turning a local mission question into an international Church debate. This step helped transform disagreement among missionaries into a formal controversy requiring papal decisions.
In September 1645, Church authorities in Rome condemned certain Chinese rites as superstitious, supporting the Dominican critique. This decision directly challenged the Jesuit claim that many rites were civil ceremonies rather than religious worship. The ruling made the China mission’s “accommodation” approach a matter of obedience and doctrine, not only strategy.
After reviewing Jesuit arguments, the same Roman mission authority lifted its earlier condemnation in 1656. This back-and-forth decision-making kept the dispute alive and encouraged both sides to keep lobbying. The lack of a stable ruling also made Chinese officials skeptical about whether missionaries could speak with one consistent voice.
In 1664, Johann Adam Schall von Bell and other Jesuits were accused of political wrongdoing and “false” astronomy linked to calendar-making at the Qing court. They were imprisoned and condemned, but the sentences were later reversed, and Schall’s name was rehabilitated after further investigation. The episode showed both the power and vulnerability of Jesuits who served the state through science.
After proving errors in the official calendar, Ferdinand Verbiest rose to lead the Beijing Imperial Observatory, strengthening Jesuit influence through technical expertise. His role tied the mission’s fortunes to court politics, because astronomy and calendar-making were key state functions. This court access gave Jesuits room to operate, but also made disputes like the rites question politically sensitive.
In 1692, the Kangxi Emperor issued an edict allowing Christian churches to remain and permitting Catholic worship, treating it as not inherently disruptive to public order. Missionaries viewed this as major legal protection, even though it did not make Christianity an official “orthodox” teaching equal to Confucianism. The edict marked a high point for Jesuit hopes that cultural accommodation could coexist with imperial acceptance.
On November 20, 1704, Pope Clement XI issued a decree against the Chinese rites, rejecting key parts of the Jesuit accommodation policy. This ruling pushed the dispute from debate into enforcement and discipline, because missionaries now had to follow a stricter line. It also set up a diplomatic clash with the Qing court, which viewed the rites as central to social and political ethics.
In 1705, Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon arrived in Beijing as the first papal legate sent to handle the rites dispute directly with the Qing court. Kangxi initially received him, but demanded assurances that missionaries would maintain the traditional rites the emperor considered “civil.” The mission quickly became a test of authority: papal discipline versus imperial oversight of foreigners.
In January 1707, de Tournon issued a decree at Nanjing requiring missionaries to abolish the condemned rites, with severe Church penalties for disobedience. This hardened lines within the Catholic mission and signaled to Qing authorities that Rome would not compromise. The decree helped trigger expulsions and tighter controls because it conflicted with what the emperor expected from the missionaries at court.
On March 19, 1715, Pope Clement XI reinforced the anti-rites position with the bull Ex illa die. The bull formally prohibited practices tied to ancestor veneration and Confucius ceremonies for Catholic converts, rejecting the Jesuit claim that these were acceptable cultural honors. This decision marked a turning point where a once-flexible mission strategy became officially banned by the papacy.
After repeated conflicts over the rites and outside authority, the Kangxi Emperor forbade Christian missions, arguing they were creating trouble. The ban sharply reduced the space for missionaries outside limited court roles and ended the earlier period of optimism about broad imperial acceptance. This was a major outcome of the controversy: a theological dispute in Europe contributed to political backlash in China.
On July 11, 1742, Pope Benedict XIV reaffirmed the prohibition with the bull Ex quo singulari and sought to end internal Catholic debate on the issue. The decision confirmed that the Jesuit “accommodation” approach to Chinese rites would not be permitted under Church discipline at that time. In practice, it closed the 1601–1742 arc: a mission launched through cultural adaptation ended with firm Roman restrictions and lasting damage to Catholic prospects in Qing China.
