Jesuit priest Francis Xavier landed at Kagoshima and began preaching Christianity, marking the start of sustained Catholic mission work in Japan. His arrival built on earlier Portuguese contact and opened a new religious and cultural channel alongside trade. This initial foothold set the pattern of working through local rulers and port cities.
After establishing early communities, Xavier departed Japan, leaving other Jesuits—especially Cosme de Torres—to continue the work. This shift mattered because the mission became a long-term institution rather than a single leader’s project. It also pushed Jesuits to deepen language study, local relationships, and regional strategy.
Ōmura Sumitada’s baptism marked the first time a Japanese territorial lord formally adopted Christianity. This gave missionaries protection and resources and encouraged conversions within his domains. It also tied the new faith more closely to politics and trade in Kyūshū port regions.
Nagasaki developed into a key harbor for Portuguese ships and a main base area for Christian communities. The growing port connected mission work to international commerce and to local lords competing for foreign trade. This prosperity also increased government attention and later suspicion toward missionary influence.
Jesuit visitor Alessandro Valignano arrived to supervise and strengthen the Japan mission. He promoted “adaptation,” meaning missionaries should follow key Japanese customs (especially elite etiquette) to be taken seriously. His reforms encouraged training of Japanese clergy and a more structured mission system.
Ōmura Sumitada issued a legal act transferring control of Nagasaki and Mogi to the Society of Jesus. This created an unusually strong Jesuit base where church building, schooling, and trade support could be coordinated. The arrangement also made the mission more visible—and more politically sensitive—to national unifiers.
Four Japanese Christian youths left Nagasaki on a Jesuit-planned mission to visit Portugal, Spain, and Rome. The trip was meant to build support for the Japan mission and to show Japanese visitors the wider Catholic world. It also became the first Japanese diplomatic-style encounter with the papacy and European courts.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered Christian missionaries (often called “bateren”) to leave Japan, signaling a major policy shift from toleration to restriction. Although enforcement varied at first, the edict introduced the idea that Christianity could be treated as a political risk. This change began a long move toward persecution and tighter control of foreign ties.
After the 1587 expulsion policy, Hideyoshi moved to place key port lands—Nagasaki, Motegi, and Urakami—under direct rule rather than Jesuit administration. This reduced the mission’s ability to operate openly from a protected enclave. It also showed how central authorities linked religion, ports, and security.
By Hideyoshi’s order, twenty-six Catholics—Japanese believers and foreign clergy—were executed at Nishizaka in Nagasaki. The event became a powerful warning and a turning point toward harsher repression. It also shaped later Catholic memory of Japan as a major site of early modern martyrdom.
Under Tokugawa rule, Christianity was formally banned and missionaries were ordered out, reflecting fears that foreign religion could undermine political stability. The ban pushed believers underground and made enforcement a core part of state policy. This was the decisive break that transformed a public mission into a persecuted, secret faith.
Authorities executed fifty-five Catholics in Nagasaki in a mass event later known as the Great Martyrdom of Nagasaki. It showed that the Tokugawa state would use public punishment to deter hidden priests and lay networks. The scale of the killings marked a new level of coordinated repression.
A major uprising in Shimabara and Amakusa (1637–1638) grew out of local grievances and included many Catholic peasants, giving it strong Christian associations in the eyes of the shogunate. Its defeat convinced leaders that Christianity remained a serious internal threat. Afterward, enforcement against the faith became even more systematic.
In 1639 Portuguese ships were forbidden to trade with or visit Japan, cutting the main European link associated with Catholic missions. In 1640 Macau sent an embassy to Nagasaki to restore trade, but the delegation was seized and most members were executed. This outcome signaled that the Tokugawa state would not reopen the door to the Portuguese—and that the Jesuit mission era in Japan was effectively over.
