Papal-backed crusade opens the Livonian campaign
Labels: Papacy, LivoniaIn 1198, fighting in the lower Daugava (Western Dvina) region marked the start of sustained papal-backed warfare to conquer and convert Baltic peoples in Livonia (roughly parts of today’s Latvia and Estonia). These campaigns later became known as part of the wider Northern Crusades. They set the model for using crusader armies and church institutions together to expand Latin Christianity in the northeast Baltic.
