In 1198, fighting in the lower Daugava (Western Dvina) region marked the start of sustained papal-backed warfare to conquer and convert Baltic peoples in Livonia (roughly parts of today’s Latvia and Estonia). These campaigns later became known as part of the wider Northern Crusades. They set the model for using crusader armies and church institutions together to expand Latin Christianity in the northeast Baltic.
In 1199, Albert (often called Albert of Riga) received authority as bishop on the condition that he could conquer and hold the mission territory. His appointment tied Christianization directly to military and political control. Albert soon organized repeated expeditions that helped transform a mission field into a crusader-ruled frontier.
In 1201, Albert and supporting merchants founded Riga, which became the main port and logistical hub for crusading in Livonia. Riga linked the conquest to long-distance trade and migration from the German lands. Over time, it became the leading city of the church-led polity that emerged in the region.
In 1202, Albert founded the Order of the Brothers of the Sword (Sword Brothers) to provide a standing military force in Livonia. Unlike short-term crusader contingents, the order could hold castles and enforce conversion year after year. This marked a shift from sporadic raids to durable institutional conquest.
In 1207, crusader-held Livonia was formalized as Terra Mariana (“Land of Mary”), reflecting a new political structure built around church rule, military orders, and fortified settlements. This helped stabilize conquest by turning conquered territory into a recognized entity with defined claims. It also increased pressure on neighboring non-Christian groups by creating an expanding frontier state.
On June 15, 1219, Danish forces defeated local Estonian groups at Lyndanisse (Tallinn). The victory helped Denmark claim northern Estonia as its crusading contribution, adding a major royal power to the conquest alongside German bishops and military orders. This intensified the regional struggle by expanding the coalition of Christian conquerors.
In 1224, crusader forces captured Tartu (Dorpat), a key stronghold tied to the last major organized resistance on the Estonian mainland. Its fall helped consolidate Christian control over much of Estonia and strengthened the network of castles and bishoprics. The conquest phase increasingly shifted from battles to governing and enforcing conversion.
In 1226, Emperor Frederick II issued the Golden Bull of Rimini, a charter widely associated with granting the Teutonic Order rights to conquer and hold lands in Prussia. This provided a legal framework for a new, parallel Christianization drive south of Livonia. It helped the Teutonic Order build an “Order State,” combining crusade ideology with territorial rule.
On June 16, 1230, a treaty attributed to Duke Konrad of Masovia and the Teutonic Order transferred Chełmno (Kulm) land and recognized the Order’s independence and future conquests. This agreement anchored the Order’s long-term position on the Baltic frontier. It also signaled that conversion campaigns would be tied to permanent territorial control rather than temporary raids.
On September 22, 1236, the Sword Brothers suffered a major defeat at Saule against Samogitian and Semigallian forces. The loss weakened the crusading project in Livonia and showed that forced conversion could face coordinated regional resistance. As a result, the Sword Brothers were absorbed into the Teutonic Order the next year, tightening Teutonic control across the eastern Baltic.
On April 5, 1242, forces associated with the Livonian Order and the Bishopric of Dorpat were defeated on Lake Peipus by troops from Novgorod and Vladimir-Suzdal led by Alexander Nevsky. The defeat limited Latin crusader expansion into Orthodox Christian lands and redirected energies back toward Baltic pagan regions. It became a major symbolic moment in the contested religious and political frontier.
On February 2, 1249, the Teutonic Order concluded the Treaty of Christburg with Prussian clans, represented with papal involvement. The treaty offered rights and protections to Prussians who accepted Christianity, aiming to stabilize conquest through negotiated conversion. In practice, continued warfare showed the limits of treaty-based Christianization when local resistance remained strong.
Around 1250–1251, Lithuanian ruler Mindaugas accepted baptism in the Catholic rite, reducing immediate military pressure from crusading orders. In 1253 he received a royal crown supported by the papacy, briefly placing Lithuania within the Latin Christian political sphere. This was a turning point because it showed that conversion could also be used as high-level diplomacy, not only forced mission.
On July 13, 1260, Samogitian-led forces defeated a combined Teutonic and Livonian army at Durbe. The scale of the defeat encouraged uprisings across Baltic lands under crusader pressure, showing that conquest was still fragile. It directly set conditions for the Great Prussian Uprising and prolonged the violent phase of Christianization.
In September 1260, major Prussian clans launched a large-scale revolt against the Teutonic Order’s conquest and forced conversion policies. The uprising lasted many years and required the Order to seek repeated reinforcements from Western Europe. Its length and intensity showed how Christianization campaigns could produce sustained backlash rather than quick religious change.
By 1274, the Great Prussian Uprising had been crushed, allowing the Teutonic Order to tighten control over Prussia. The outcome strengthened the Order State and expanded the reach of Latin Christian institutions, settlements, and castle networks. It also shifted the crusading frontier toward Lithuania and remaining unconquered Baltic groups.
On March 5, 1279, Lithuania defeated the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order at Aizkraukle, killing many knights and leaders. The defeat helped encourage further resistance among neighboring groups and kept the crusading frontier unstable. By the late 1200s, the conflict increasingly centered on Lithuania and its allies, where full conversion by force remained out of reach.
By about 1290, the long Livonian and Estonian crusading phase had largely succeeded in bringing much of present-day Latvia and Estonia under Christian-ruled institutions, with remaining resistance increasingly pushed to the margins. This did not end Baltic warfare, but it changed its character: the crusader state was now entrenched, and later campaigns focused more on Lithuania. The period’s legacy was an enduring political order in which military-religious rule shaped settlement, trade, and church life in the eastern Baltic.
