Their growth shows how Catholic missions institutionalized long-term work through schools, seminaries, and medical services.
European powers met in Berlin and agreed on rules that shaped recognition of colonial claims and trade in Africa. While not a “mission conference,” it sped up the Scramble for Africa and changed the political conditions in which missions operated. In many places, missions gained easier access and protection under colonial rule, but they also became more entangled with colonial systems.
King Mwanga II’s persecution led to the killing of Christian converts in Buganda (now part of Uganda), including those burned alive at Namugongo. The events became a powerful symbol for African Christianity, showing that local converts—not only foreign missionaries—were central to the church’s growth. The memory of these martyrs later strengthened Christian identity and pilgrimage traditions in East Africa.
Leaders of major Protestant and Anglican mission organizations met in Edinburgh to coordinate mission strategy and cooperation. The conference is often treated as a key turning point toward more organized international planning for missions. Its influence shaped how mission societies worked in Africa in the early 1900s, including debates about education, church unity, and relationships with colonial governments.
Pope Benedict XV issued Maximum illud, urging Catholic missions to focus on building local churches with well-trained indigenous clergy and less dependence on nationalist or colonial agendas. This policy push mattered in Africa because it gave official support to training Africans for leadership roles in the Catholic Church. It also reflected growing awareness that mission credibility could be damaged when too closely aligned with colonial power.
