In 647, forces of the early Muslim caliphate pushed west from Egypt into Byzantine-held Ifriqiya (roughly modern Tunisia). This was not yet a permanent takeover, but it showed that North Africa was now within reach of Muslim armies and could be pressured repeatedly.
Also in 647, the Battle of Sufetula ended in a Muslim victory over forces linked to Byzantine North Africa. The battle is often treated as a key early turning point because it exposed the vulnerability of the Byzantine Exarchate of Africa and encouraged further expeditions westward.
Around 670, the Muslims founded Kairouan in inland Tunisia as a secure headquarters away from coastal Byzantine naval power. This changed the conquest from occasional raids into a more stable effort, providing a base for administration, settlement, and future campaigns across the Maghreb.
In 682, a Berber-Byzantine coalition defeated an Umayyad force and killed Uqba ibn Nafi near Vescera (around modern Biskra in Algeria). The defeat highlighted strong local resistance and showed that holding territory in North Africa required more than fast-moving expeditions.
After Uqba’s death, Berber-led forces challenged the Muslim position around Kairouan, interrupting early consolidation. This period matters because it forced later Muslim commanders to combine military operations with longer-term governance and alliances in the region.
In 688, Umayyad forces defeated Berber and Byzantine-linked opponents at the Battle of Mamma in the Aurès region. The victory helped restore momentum after earlier setbacks and kept the broader project of conquering the Maghreb alive.
In 698, Umayyad forces captured Carthage, a major Byzantine center and symbol of Roman power in North Africa. The fall of Carthage reduced the Byzantines’ ability to project power in the western Mediterranean and made Muslim control in Ifriqiya more secure.
Around the time Carthage fell, Berber forces led by Dihya (often called al-Kahina) inflicted a notable defeat on Umayyad armies in 698. This resistance slowed westward expansion and shaped later strategies, including renewed campaigns and efforts to secure local support.
By 705, the eastern Maghreb was organized as the Umayyad province (wilayah) of Ifriqiya, separate from Egypt’s administration. This mattered because conquest increasingly became governance: taxation, garrisons, and provincial leadership supported further expansion toward the far west.
In May 711, Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād crossed from North Africa to the Iberian Peninsula and landed at Gibraltar (later associated with the name Jabal Ṭāriq). The move connected the North African conquests to a new front in Europe and set off the rapid collapse of Visigothic rule in many regions.
In July 711, Ṭāriq’s forces defeated the Visigoths at the Battle of Guadalete, and King Roderic was killed (or disappeared) during the fighting. With the Visigothic leadership shattered, organized resistance weakened, making further conquests—especially toward Toledo—much easier.
In 712, Mūsā ibn Nuṣayr crossed into Iberia with a larger follow-on force, strengthening and formalizing the conquest. His arrival shows how the campaign shifted from a bold crossing to a sustained takeover coordinated with North Africa’s governors.
In 713, an agreement known as the Treaty of Orihuela (Treaty of Tudmir) set terms between Umayyad leaders and the Visigothic ruler Theudimer in southeast Iberia. It is important because it illustrates how conquest could also proceed through negotiated surrender, allowing local communities to continue under new political authority.
From November 712 to June 30, 713, the Umayyads besieged Mérida, a well-fortified city with deep Roman-era defenses. Its fall helped break remaining Visigothic military strength in the south and supported the broader consolidation that made Muslim rule in Iberia more durable.
By 719 (or soon after), Umayyad forces captured Narbonne in Septimania, creating a base north of the Pyrenees. This marked a clear outcome of the 711–714 conquest: Muslim rule in Iberia had become stable enough to support expansion into southern Gaul by land and sea routes.
Conquest of North Africa and crossing into Iberia (647–718)
