By the late 1200s, Muslim merchants from the Indian Ocean were increasingly active along Sumatra’s north coast. These commercial links helped Islamic beliefs, law, and learning travel alongside goods and people. This created conditions for local rulers to adopt Islam to strengthen trade and diplomacy.
A royal tombstone dated 1297 for Malik al-Salih at Samudera (Pasai) is among the clearest early pieces of evidence for an Islamic ruling court in the region. Pasai became a key Muslim port, linking local society to wider Islamic trade and scholarly networks. Its prestige later influenced neighboring Malay courts across the Malacca Strait.
The Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai (Chronicle of the Kings of Pasai) likely formed in the late 1300s or early 1400s, preserving a Malay-language story of early Islam and kingship in Pasai. Such texts helped connect political authority with Islamic identity in popular memory. They also influenced later Malay historical writing about Malacca and its rulers.
Around 1400, Malacca began growing from a small settlement into a major trading center on the Strait of Malacca. Its location let it control shipping between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. This trade-driven growth made religious and diplomatic ties with Muslim ports (including Pasai) especially valuable.
Sources differ on exactly when Malacca’s first rulers converted, but many accounts place a key shift in the early 1400s. Islamic conversion at court mattered because it helped Malacca attract Muslim merchants and scholars, and it shaped law and public life. Over time, Islam became firmly rooted in Malacca’s governing elite.
By the mid-1400s, Malacca was not only a leading marketplace but also an important point for the spread of Islam across the Malay world. Its rulers and officials supported Muslim institutions and connections that reached into Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. This period helped standardize Malay-Islamic court culture that later states adopted.
In 1511, Portugal seized Malacca, ending the sultanate’s control of the port. This disrupted Muslim trade patterns and pushed merchants and political rivals to look for alternative centers. Northern Sumatra—especially Aceh—benefited from this change and became more important for Islamic and commercial networks.
From about 1514, Ali Mughayat Syah consolidated Aceh and began building a stronger Islamic sultanate at Sumatra’s northern tip. Aceh’s growth was tied to both religious legitimacy and control of trade routes. This marked a turning point where Aceh competed directly for influence once associated with Malacca.
In June 1521, Portuguese forces fought Aceh and were defeated in a major clash near Banda Aceh. The conflict showed that Aceh could resist European military pressure while defending Muslim trade and political autonomy. These wars became part of Aceh’s identity as a frontier sultanate in the early modern Indian Ocean world.
In 1524, Aceh conquered Pasai, taking over a well-known Muslim port and its networks. This helped Aceh present itself as a leading Islamic power in the region. It also strengthened Aceh’s ability to influence religious life and trade across the Strait of Malacca.
From 1607 to 1636, Sultan Iskandar Muda led Aceh to its greatest territorial reach and international prominence. Aceh’s power extended over key Sumatran ports and parts of the Malay Peninsula, and the court became known as a center of Islamic learning. Expansion and religious authority reinforced each other: political dominance helped spread Acehnese-backed Islamic institutions and norms.
In 1612, a revised version of the Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) was produced under royal patronage; surviving manuscripts come from this edited tradition. The text helped preserve an influential story of Malacca’s origins, court culture, and shift to Islamic-Malay identity. This literary legacy shaped how later Malay communities understood Islamization and legitimate rule, even after Malacca’s fall.
In 1629, Aceh launched a major naval attack aimed at dislodging the Portuguese from Malacca, but it ended in a decisive defeat. The setback weakened Aceh’s ability to dominate the strait by force. After this, Aceh’s influence increasingly depended on trade, diplomacy, and religious authority rather than sustained conquest.
In the 1600s, Aceh’s court supported major Islamic writers and debates, helping shape Malay Islamic thought. Works such as Nūr al-Dīn al-Rānīrī’s Bustān al-Salāṭīn show an effort to define proper religious practice and connect Acehnese kingship to Islamic history. These intellectual movements spread beyond Aceh through teachers, students, and texts circulating in Malay.
From August 1640 to January 1641, the Dutch East India Company (VOC), allied with Johor, captured Malacca from Portugal. This changed the balance of power in the strait again, forcing Muslim states to adapt to new European competition. It also marked a clear end to the earlier era when Malacca’s Portuguese fortress was the main obstacle to regional Muslim control.
In February 1641, Taj ul-Alam Safiatuddin became Aceh’s ruler, beginning a period of female sovereignty that lasted decades. Her reign shows that Aceh’s Islamic political culture could accommodate a woman monarch, even amid pressure from elites and European powers. The sultanate’s influence continued through trade and religious life, even as its military dominance faded.
