Labels: Trans-Saharan trade, Maghrib, SahelBy the late 700s–800s, gold, salt, and other goods moved across the Sahara in organized trade networks. These routes also carried Muslim merchants, Arabic literacy, and new religious ideas into the western Sahel. This created the long-term conditions for Islam to spread in the Niger Bend through commerce and urban life rather than mass conquest.
