  1. Alibaba Cloud launched as Alibaba’s cloud arm

    Alibaba Group launched Alibaba Cloud (also known as Aliyun) in September 2009 to provide cloud computing services for Alibaba’s own platforms and external customers. This created the technical foundation for later expansion beyond China by standardizing how computing and storage could be delivered as online services.

  2. AliOS mobile operating system publicly released

    Alibaba Cloud released AliOS (then known as YunOS/Aliyun OS) in July 2011. While not a data-center expansion step by itself, it reflected Alibaba Cloud’s broader strategy: building a platform ecosystem that could run services across devices and regions.

  3. Hong Kong data center opens for cross-border demand

  5. Equinix partnership expands enterprise connectivity abroad

    On June 4, 2015, Equinix and Aliyun announced an agreement to provide direct access to Alibaba Cloud via Equinix Cloud Exchange in Hong Kong and Silicon Valley. This mattered because connectivity partnerships helped Alibaba Cloud reach multinational customers without relying only on Alibaba-owned facilities.

  6. Singapore data center announced as overseas headquarters

  9. Frankfurt data center opens as first Europe location

  12. Indonesia data center commences operations in Jakarta

  13. UK (London) availability zones open for Europe growth

    Alibaba Cloud opened two availability zones in the UK (London) on October 22, 2018. With London added to Frankfurt and Dubai, Alibaba Cloud emphasized a growing EMEA footprint and stronger disaster recovery through operating multiple zones in one country.

  14. International footprint solidifies by end of 2019
