As Second Life grew, its avatar-driven culture tied closely to buying and selling virtual goods, land, and services using the Linden Dollar (L$). This strengthened the link between avatars and commerce: appearance items (skins, hair, clothing) and identity-themed goods became central to everyday participation.
Second Life released a main viewer update that added in-world voice chat, enabling more natural “presence” through speech and spatial audio (hearing voices relative to where avatars stand). Voice changed how people experienced identity and social interaction, making avatars feel more like embodied participants than text-only characters.
Linden Lab acquired XStreet SL and OnRez, two leading web-based marketplaces for Second Life virtual goods. This move supported an ecosystem where avatar identity was increasingly built through purchasable add-ons—especially fashion, accessories, and body/appearance products.
Second Life’s Viewer 2.3 beta added Display Names, allowing each account to keep a unique username while showing an optional changeable name in-world. This formalized a common virtual-world practice: separating stable identity (account name) from flexible self-presentation (display identity).

Meta announced that its 3D avatars would extend beyond VR and become usable across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram (including Stories and DMs), aiming for a more portable identity. This signaled a shift from avatars as “in one virtual world” to avatars as a cross-app social identity layer.
Meta introduced the Meta Avatars Store, a marketplace for purchasing digital clothing for avatars (launching with major fashion brands). This step connected avatars directly to mainstream consumer branding and monetized self-presentation across Meta’s apps.
Meta expanded its avatar fashion offerings by partnering with DressX, adding more digital outfits for use across Meta’s avatar-enabled platforms. This reinforced a trend also seen in Second Life: identity and presence are strongly shaped by an economy of wearable digital goods.
WhatsApp started rolling out customizable 3D avatars that could be used as profile images and sticker packs in chats. Bringing avatars into a daily messaging app broadened avatar identity from “virtual worlds” into everyday communication, even when users were not in VR.
By 2023, Second Life remained a major reference point in discussions about virtual worlds, especially around identity, user-created goods, and the risks and benefits of monetizing digital presence. The period closed with a clearer picture of two paths: platform-specific avatar economies (like Second Life) and large cross-app avatar systems (like Meta’s).
