For virtual platforms, this provided a standards-based path toward safer access control without relying only on a platform account.
W3C published DID Core v1.0 as a formal web standard, defining the DID syntax and DID Documents (which can list keys and service endpoints). This was a turning point because it gave virtual-platform builders a stable base for interoperable decentralized identity. After this point, “DID support” could be framed as standards adoption rather than a vendor-specific experiment.
The Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF) described the Universal Resolver as a tool to resolve many different DID methods in a consistent way. This supported adoption by reducing the “which DID method do we pick?” problem for developers and testers. For virtual platforms, resolving many DID types is important when users arrive with different wallets or identity providers.
The VRM Consortium announced the official release of VRM version 1.0. However, most major virtual platforms still relied primarily on platform accounts or wallet logins rather than full DID-native identity portability. The period ends with a clear direction: DIDs became a stable standard, but broad, user-facing DID adoption inside mainstream virtual platforms remained limited and uneven.
Spatial published guidance showing users can log in using MetaMask, linking a platform account to a crypto wallet through message signing. This is not the same as a DID login, but it demonstrates a major adoption pathway for decentralized identity ideas in virtual-world access: wallets as user-controlled authenticators. It also highlights a common limitation: changing wallet addresses can require creating a new account, which DIDs aim to avoid by supporting identifier portability.
VRChat documented how users can link third-party platform accounts (like Steam or Meta) into a VRChat account to unlock features. This highlights the identity challenge DIDs try to solve: users often have multiple logins tied to different companies and devices. It also shows why virtual platforms care about stable identity—creator access, reputation systems, and safety features depend on reliable accounts.
