This sets the starting point for later Upper Paleolithic technocomplexes across Europe.
At Grotta del Cavallo (southern Italy), two deciduous (baby) teeth were re-identified as Homo sapiens and dated to roughly 45,000–43,000 years before present. The find matters because it ties early modern humans to a distinctive early Upper Paleolithic industry (the Uluzzian) near the time Neanderthals were still present in parts of Europe. It also shows that early dispersal into Europe involved multiple regions, not a single pathway.
The Aurignacian became one of the first widespread Upper Paleolithic technocomplexes in Europe and is strongly associated with early modern humans. It is known for blade-based stone tools and frequent use of bone, antler, and ivory, as well as early personal ornaments and symbolic expression. Its spread marks a major shift in technology and social signaling compared with many earlier Middle Paleolithic toolkits.
A modern human maxilla fragment (KC4) found at Kents Cavern (England) has been discussed as evidence for early Homo sapiens in northwestern Europe, with published estimates placing it broadly around 44,200–41,500 years before present (with debate about the dating). Regardless of the controversy, the find illustrates how quickly modern humans may have reached far western regions. It also shows why careful stratigraphy and direct dating are crucial for building reliable migration timelines.
In the Swabian Jura (southern Germany), Aurignacian layers at Geißenklösterle produced some of the earliest known musical instruments (flutes) and small carved figures. These finds indicate that symbolic behaviors—music, figurative carving, and ornamentation—were established early in the European Upper Paleolithic. The region became a key reference area for studying how these practices developed and spread.
The Venus of Hohle Fels (Germany), carved from mammoth ivory, is dated to roughly 42,000–40,000 years ago and is widely described as the earliest undisputed depiction of a human figure. Its Aurignacian context links early modern human settlement with new forms of portable symbolic objects. Such pieces suggest expanded roles for identity, teaching, ritual, or social communication within groups.
After the Aurignacian, the Gravettian emerged as a widely recognized Upper Paleolithic technocomplex, often dated roughly 33,000–22,000 years before present. It is associated with characteristic stone tools and a broad geographic spread, and it includes well-known evidence for elaborate burials and many “Venus” figurines. This transition marks a shift in toolmaking styles and, in many regions, changes in settlement and subsistence strategies.
In Moravia and nearby areas, a Gravettian variant often called the Pavlovian is dated to about 29,000–25,000 years before present. Sites in this region are notable for evidence of repeated occupation, complex use of mammoth resources, and rich symbolic materials (ornaments and art). These patterns suggest highly organized hunter-gatherer lifeways in harsh, cold-steppe environments near expanding ice sheets.
The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was the coldest part of the last ice age, commonly described as spanning roughly 29,000–19,000 years ago. Expanding ice sheets, lower sea levels, and colder, drier climates reduced habitable zones and reshaped animal and plant distributions. These conditions likely pushed many human groups into refugia (more livable regions) and contributed to population bottlenecks and cultural reorganization.
Dolní Věstonice (Czech Republic) is a key Gravettian site dated to around 26,000 years before present, famous for its dense archaeological record. The site includes evidence for art and complex activity areas, helping researchers reconstruct daily life, technology, and social practices. Together with nearby sites, it anchors much of what is known about Gravettian adaptations in Central Europe.
As the cold peak and its aftermath changed landscapes, many areas saw the end of broadly “Gravettian” cultural unity by around 22,000 years before present, with regional traditions diverging. This was not a single sudden event everywhere, but a gradual transition shaped by climate stress, changing game availability, and shifting mobility. The result was a more fragmented cultural map across Europe compared with earlier Gravettian-wide patterns.
After the LGM, an Epigravettian (also called Tardigravettian in some older usage) tradition emerged in parts of southern and eastern Europe, often described as beginning around ~21,000 cal BP. It is commonly framed as a continuation and transformation of Gravettian traditions under new environmental and demographic conditions. This provides a clear closing outcome for the 45–20 ka story: Upper Paleolithic cultures did not end, but reorganized into new regional forms as climates slowly improved.
