A 2019 reanalysis of fossils from Apidima Cave (Greece) reported that one specimen (Apidima 1) dates to about 210,000 years ago and was identified as Homo sapiens. While outside Arabia, this finding added pressure to older, simpler dispersal timelines by suggesting very early excursions into Eurasia. It also reinforced the idea that early modern human movements could be widespread but not always permanent.
During the transition from Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 to MIS 5, global sea levels were lower than today. Lower sea levels could have narrowed water barriers such as Bab el-Mandeb (between Africa and Arabia), potentially making coastal and near-coastal movements into Arabia easier. Climate also shifted toward wetter conditions at times, expanding habitable corridors.
At the Jebel Faya (Faya-1) rockshelter in today’s United Arab Emirates, stone tools in “Assemblage C” were dated by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) to roughly 125,000 years ago. The assemblage’s toolmaking methods were argued to resemble parts of northeast African Middle Stone Age technology more than nearby Levantine traditions. This made Jebel Faya a key site in debates about early dispersals into Arabia.
During MIS 5 (often linked with the last interglacial and its following phases), parts of Arabia experienced intervals of increased rainfall compared with more arid periods. These wetter windows could create temporary lakes, grasslands, and better conditions for humans and animals moving through the region. Such swings help explain why early occupation evidence appears in pulses rather than continuously.
Homo sapiens fossils and burials at Skhul and Qafzeh (Israel) are commonly dated to roughly 120,000–90,000 years ago. These sites show early modern humans living in the Levant for long stretches and sometimes practicing burial. They also highlight that the Levant and Arabia were connected parts of a larger migration zone rather than separate stories.
Archaeologists reported a distinct Middle Stone Age stone-tool tradition in Dhofar (southern Oman) known as the Late Nubian Complex. Optically stimulated luminescence dating placed some of these tool scatters at about 106,000 years old. Because similar “Nubian” methods are known from northeast Africa, the Dhofar finds strengthened arguments for connections across the Red Sea and along southern Arabia.
By combining evidence from sites like Jebel Faya and Dhofar with paleoclimate and sea-level data, researchers developed stronger versions of a “southern” dispersal hypothesis. In this model, people could move through Arabia in wetter windows and potentially follow coastlines and near-coastal corridors toward South Asia. The key shift is from a single late migration to a picture of several earlier trials and movements.
Beyond the oldest layer, Jebel Faya includes additional tool-bearing horizons dated to around ~95,000 years ago and much later periods. This pattern suggests eastern Arabia was not a one-time stop, but a landscape people returned to when climate allowed. Repeated occupations matter because they support the idea of multiple dispersal pulses, not a single migration event.
As more early sites were dated and compared, many researchers argued that Homo sapiens dispersed out of Africa multiple times. Some early groups may have moved into Arabia and the Levant during favorable climates and then disappeared or retreated when conditions worsened. This helps explain why early occupations can be real and significant even if they did not directly lead to later global populations.
A fossil upper jaw (Misliya-1) from Misliya Cave on Mount Carmel, Israel, was dated to about 177,000–194,000 years ago. This find shows that Homo sapiens reached the eastern Mediterranean well before the later, better-known dispersals. It establishes a wider regional context for early movements toward Arabia and possible coastal routes.
In July 2025, UNESCO inscribed the Faya Palaeolandscape (which includes Jebel Faya/Faya-1) on the World Heritage List. The listing recognizes the area’s long archaeological sequence and its importance for understanding human adaptation and movement in changing desert environments. This designation also signals an outcome of decades of research: Jebel Faya is now treated as a globally significant reference point for early Arabian occupations.
Today, Jebel Faya is widely used to test competing explanations for early Arabian occupations: migration from Africa, local continuity, or repeated short-lived expansions. Its well-known dating results and tool comparisons keep it central to debates about coastal and near-coastal dispersal routes between roughly 125–50 thousand years ago. The site’s legacy is a more complex “start-to-end” story of human expansion—built from climate windows, movement, and repeated settlement rather than a single event.
