Homo luzonensis shows earlier water crossings
Labels: Homo luzonensis, Callao Cave, PhilippinesFossils from Callao Cave on Luzon (Philippines) were dated to about 67,000 years ago and assigned to a distinct hominin species, Homo luzonensis. Because the Philippines were still islands, this evidence implies that some hominins reached ocean-separated landmasses in Island Southeast Asia well before the main period of Homo sapiens expansion in Wallacea. It highlights that maritime dispersal in the region may have deep roots.
