Denisovans leave earliest genetic traces at Denisova Cave
Labels: Denisova Cave, DenisovansSediment DNA from Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains shows Denisovan mitochondrial DNA in layers that began accumulating about 250,000 years ago. This establishes Denisovans as early occupants of the site and links them to early Middle Paleolithic (Stone Age) activity there. It sets the starting context for later contacts with Neanderthals and Homo sapiens in northern Asia.
