Sima de los Huesos shows early Neanderthal DNA
Labels: Sima de, Atapuerca, Middle PleistoceneHuman fossils from Sima de los Huesos (Atapuerca, Spain), dated to about 430,000 years ago, provided some of the oldest DNA evidence linked to the Neanderthal line. Genetic results helped clarify that these Middle Pleistocene people were part of the Neanderthal branch, even though some features still look more “transitional” than later Neanderthals.
