By late Neolithic times, cultures across northern China intensified agriculture and craft production, and interaction across regions increased. This matters because expanding networks helped move crops, tools, and farming knowledge between the Yellow River, Huai region, and Yangtze systems.

During the Kuahuqiao culture in the lower Yangtze region, settlements expanded into alluvial (river-built) lowlands. Research syntheses link this period to the beginning of clear evidence for rice cultivation in the lower Yangtze, marking a shift toward more managed plant production.
At the Cishan site in North China, excavations found many storage pits with large quantities of millet remains, indicating organized harvesting and storage. This is important because large-scale storage supports more permanent settlement and population growth in the Yellow River basin.
In Shandong (near the lower Yellow River), Houli sites have reported remains of rice and both major millets (broomcorn and foxtail). This matters because it suggests that crop packages could mix across regions, rather than spreading as a single-crop system.
In the Yellow River region, the Peiligang culture formed long-lasting villages with increasing reliance on cultivated crops, including millets. This matters because it shows a separate northern farming pathway developing alongside southern rice-focused systems.
At Pengtoushan in the middle Yangtze region, residues connected to rice cultivation have been radiocarbon dated to about 8200–7800 BCE. These finds are important because they show rice was being cultivated—and likely already showing domesticated traits—very early in this region.
Before full-time farming, people in the Yangtze region already gathered and used wild rice and made early pottery. This matters because pottery and plant processing helped set the stage for later rice cultivation and domestication.
