Obsidian (volcanic glass) from the island of Melos appears at Franchthi Cave on the Greek mainland by about 13,000 BCE. This is strong evidence that people were already making sea crossings and managing repeated maritime exchange routes long before farming reached the Aegean. These seafaring skills later made permanent island settlement more feasible.
Knossos on Crete was settled around 7000 BCE in the early Neolithic, making it one of the earliest known farming communities on the island. The site shows an early mix of domesticated plants and animals and long-term occupation, indicating that seaborne movement could carry the full farming way of life to large islands. Knossos became a key reference point for studying the early peopling of the Aegean islands.
By about 6500 BCE, early farming villages such as Sesklo in Thessaly were established and expanded over time. Kephala on Kea was an important Late/Final Neolithic settlement, recently dated to about 4600–4500 BCE. Evidence for early metalworking activities also points to growing experimentation that helped set the stage for the later Bronze Age.
During the Final Neolithic, Strofilas on Andros grew into a large, organized settlement with substantial walls. Rock carvings at the site include many boats, suggesting that seafaring and maritime identity were central to the community. Strofilas highlights how some Aegean island settlements became larger and more socially coordinated before the Early Bronze Age began.
From about 4500 to 3200 BCE, the Aegean saw a gradual transition from fully stone-based tools to increasing use of metals such as copper, alongside long-established farming and herding. This shift was not a sudden break; it developed through trade contacts and local experimentation. The period set up many features that became more visible in the Early Bronze Age, including stronger regional exchange networks.
By around 3300 BCE, Final Neolithic settlement systems in parts of the Cyclades, including Strofilas on Andros, were giving way to new Early Bronze Age patterns. Archaeologically, this change is seen in different types of settlements and material culture, reflecting evolving social organization and connectivity. The shift marks a turning point from Neolithic island communities toward the more complex societies of the 3rd millennium BCE.

After about 3200–3000 BCE, Crete entered the Early Minoan period, developing largely from local Neolithic predecessors while expanding contacts across the Aegean and beyond. This period shows continued growth in settlement size and craft production, supported by maritime movement. It represents a direct outcome of millennia of Neolithic colonization and seaborne exchange around Crete.
By about 3000 BCE, the long Neolithic era of Crete and many Aegean islands had largely transitioned into Early Bronze Age societies, including Early Minoan Crete and Early Cycladic island cultures. Farming and herding remained essential, but metallurgy, craft specialization, and wider trade became more prominent.
