Impressed-ware communities expanded northward along the eastern Adriatic, reaching parts of Albania and Dalmatia. This supports a model of coastal movement, where small groups could relocate and establish new settlements step by step. This change suggests longer-term settlement, stronger local identities, and evolving networks rather than only first-arrival colonization.
Radiocarbon-based arguments for “maritime pioneer colonization” propose that Cardial/Impressed Ware groups moved quickly along coastlines, creating new settlements and exchange links. Early Cardial finds in Portugal (including cave contexts used for burials and ritual) indicate that farming lifeways reached the Atlantic edge of Iberia within the broader 6th millennium BCE expansion. This demonstrates how coastal travel could compress distances across the Mediterranean.
Directly dated human remains from the Cardial Neolithic at Cova Bonica (Iberian Peninsula) fall within the mid-6th millennium to early 5th millennium BCE. This provides a clearer human timeline for the Cardial horizon, not just pottery dates. It also shows that caves could serve as burial and activity places within early farming societies.
After early coastal establishment, later Cardial/Epicardial communities helped expand Neolithic lifeways into interior zones of southern France and northeastern Iberia. “Epicardial” refers to related pottery traditions that often replaced or reworked earlier Cardial decorative styles. This shift reflects both population movement and local adaptation as farming became more common across varied landscapes.
By the early 5th millennium BCE, the earlier Cardial/Impressed Ware spread along Mediterranean coasts had largely given way to later Neolithic pottery traditions and more established farming villages. Researchers describe this as part of a complex, sometimes non-linear process, with regional “micro-breaks” and changing settlement patterns. The outcome was a permanently transformed western Mediterranean, where agriculture and herding were widespread and diverse local cultures had formed.
