Before anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) established themselves in Europe, Neanderthals were the main human group across much of the continent. This sets the background for why the first sapiens sites matter: they mark a major population and cultural transition in Europe.
At Bacho Kiro Cave in Bulgaria, directly dated fossils and DNA show Homo sapiens were present in Europe by about 46,000–45,000 years ago. This is among the clearest early anchors for the arrival of modern humans on the continent and indicates overlap with Neanderthals.

In southern Italy, the Uluzzian—an industry once often linked to Neanderthals—was tied to anatomically modern humans through analysis of teeth from Grotta del Cavallo. Dating places these remains around 45,000–43,000 years ago, showing that early sapiens groups were established in parts of southern Europe during this window.
By roughly 43,000 years ago, Aurignacian tool traditions became widespread across Europe and are strongly associated with early modern humans. This marks a shift from scattered pioneer occupations toward broader, more persistent settlement and shared cultural patterns.
Direct dating across many sites suggests Neanderthals did not persist past roughly 39,000–37,000 years ago in most regions. Their disappearance was not instant everywhere, but by the end of this interval Europe was largely occupied by Homo sapiens groups using Upper Paleolithic technologies.
A modern human genome from Kostenki (Russia), dated to about 38,700–36,200 years ago, shows connections to later Europeans and to populations spread across Eurasia. This indicates that some key parts of later European genetic structure were already forming soon after the earliest arrival period.
By about 35,000 years ago, modern humans were firmly established across much of Europe, and the story shifts from “arrival” to long-term regional development. The pioneering groups documented near 45,000 years ago helped open routes and habitats, but later Upper Paleolithic populations became the main ancestors for subsequent European prehistory.
