Initial Upper Paleolithic entry into Europe
Labels: Bacho Kiro, Initial UpperAround 47,000–43,650 years ago, Homo sapiens groups were present at Bacho Kiro Cave (Bulgaria) with Initial Upper Paleolithic (IUP) tools and ornaments. These remains are among the oldest directly dated modern human fossils in Europe, showing that dispersals into Europe began before the Aurignacian expanded widely. This sets the stage for later, more widespread Upper Paleolithic cultures such as the Aurignacian.
