Evidence from Grotte Mandrin (France) suggests an early, short-lived Homo sapiens presence in Europe before the better-known later expansions. The site is notable because it shows alternating occupations in the same cave sequence, highlighting that contact and replacement were not simple one-way events.
By about 50,000 years ago, Neanderthals were widespread across Europe and had long traditions of making Middle Paleolithic stone tools (often called the Mousterian). This provides the baseline for understanding what changed when Homo sapiens began entering and re-entering Europe in the same period.
Around this time, archaeologists see the spread of “Initial Upper Paleolithic” (IUP) technologies in parts of Europe. These toolmaking changes matter because they are often linked to pioneer modern human groups entering regions previously occupied by Neanderthals.
Human remains from Bacho Kiro Cave (Bulgaria), dated to roughly 46,000–43,000 years ago, provide some of the earliest direct evidence of modern humans in Europe. In Italy and nearby regions, the Uluzzian appears as a “transitional” archaeological complex bridging Middle and Upper Paleolithic traditions. Its importance is that it sits in the overlap window, when Neanderthals were still present but modern humans were establishing themselves, making it a key arena for possible cultural borrowing and competition.
At Ilsenhöhle in Ranis (Germany), human remains directly associated with the Lincombian–Ranisian–Jerzmanowician (LRJ) tool tradition were identified as Homo sapiens and dated to about 45,000 years ago. This helped resolve debates about who made LRJ assemblages and shows that modern humans reached higher-latitude central Europe earlier than many models once suggested.
Genome studies indicate that early modern humans in Europe were not one single group. Individuals such as Zlatý kůň (Czechia) and people connected to Ranis represent deep and early-branching lineages, implying multiple movements, small populations, and some groups that later left few descendants in Europe.
In France and northern Spain, Châtelperronian layers contain Upper Paleolithic-style artifacts (including ornaments) found with Neanderthal remains at key sites. Improved radiocarbon dating and stratigraphic work at places such as Grotte du Renne have been used to argue that Neanderthals likely made at least some of these assemblages, potentially after modern humans arrived in nearby regions.
As climates shifted and modern humans expanded, Neanderthal presence became more limited and patchy. Radiocarbon-based syntheses suggest Neanderthals disappeared from most of Europe around 41,000–39,000 years ago, though the timing likely varied by region and depends on how well sites are dated and preserved.
The Campanian Ignimbrite volcanic eruption (Italy) occurred close in time to major population and cultural changes in Europe, including late Neanderthal decline and the spread of Upper Paleolithic traditions. Researchers debate how direct its effects were, but its ash layer is an important time marker used to correlate archaeological sequences across regions.
The genome of Oase 1 (Romania), dated to roughly 37,000–42,000 years ago, contains unusually high Neanderthal ancestry (about 6–9%). The size of the Neanderthal DNA segments indicates a Neanderthal ancestor only a few generations back, showing that close biological mixing happened during the late overlap period in Europe.
By about 40,000–35,000 years ago, modern human groups and Upper Paleolithic technologies (including the Aurignacian in many areas) are broadly established across Europe. This period also includes clearer evidence for symbolic material culture in multiple regions, reflecting a new long-term population pattern after Neanderthals had largely vanished.
Although Neanderthals disappeared as a distinct population, their DNA did not. Genomic work on early modern humans helps date major Neanderthal admixture events and shows that interbreeding left a lasting genetic legacy in all non-African populations, including later Europeans, even when some early European groups themselves left few direct descendants.
