Last Glacial Maximum conditions constrain settlement
Labels: Last Glacial, Northern Europe, Ice sheetsDuring the coldest part of the last ice age, ice sheets and glaciers expanded widely and sea level dropped far below modern levels. Across much of northern and central Europe, conditions were too cold and dry for regular human settlement. These pressures set the stage for populations to persist mainly in milder southern regions (refugia) and later expand outward as climates improved.
