Across much of North America, Clovis groups used distinctive fluted stone points (a channel flake removed from the base) and a highly mobile hunting-and-foraging way of life. This is the immediate technological and cultural backdrop for the Folsom and other post-Clovis complexes that followed on the Great Plains.
Around 12,900 years ago, parts of the Northern Hemisphere experienced a rapid return to cooler conditions known as the Younger Dryas. These climate changes mattered for late Ice Age hunters because shifting temperatures and moisture affected grasslands, water sources, and the movements of animals such as bison.
In the central Great Plains, the Folsom complex developed as one of the key post-Clovis traditions. Folsom toolkits are especially known for smaller, finely made fluted points and for strong archaeological links to communal bison hunting.
Many Folsom sites show hunters targeting extinct Bison antiquus, often in arroyo settings that helped trap or channel herds. This emphasis reflects a shift toward specialized bison hunting on the Plains compared with the better-known Clovis associations with mammoth at some sites.
As Folsom times ended, later point styles and hunting practices became more common on the Plains, including Agate Basin and Hell Gap. These are often grouped within the broader “Plano” tradition, marked by lanceolate points with different flaking patterns and continued reliance on bison.
By about 11,700 years ago, the Younger Dryas ended and the Holocene began, bringing rapid warming in many regions. This broader environmental shift helped set the stage for continued changes in landscapes, animal communities, and human adaptations after the classic Folsom period.
After a major 1908 flood cut into Wild Horse Arroyo near Folsom, New Mexico, George McJunkin noticed large fossil bones eroding from the arroyo wall. His observation set in motion the later investigations that would make Folsom a milestone in North American archaeology.
In 1926, excavations at the Folsom site documented a fluted projectile point in direct association with ribs of extinct Bison antiquus. This clear association helped convince researchers that people lived in North America far earlier than many scholars had accepted at the time.
Following the type-site work, Jesse D. Figgins applied “Folsom” as a formal label for this Paleoindian tradition. Naming the complex helped researchers compare sites across the Plains and recognize a broader post-Clovis pattern rather than a single local discovery.
Work at the Lindenmeier Site in northern Colorado showed that Folsom archaeology includes more than kill locations. A major campsite with many tools and features helped researchers reconstruct daily life, toolmaking, and longer stays in some places.
The Hell Gap site in Wyoming preserves stacked layers from multiple Paleoindian complexes, showing change over time rather than a single “one-size-fits-all” Plains culture. Its sequence helped define intermediate and later complexes (including Goshen and Hell Gap) that relate to the end of Folsom and the rise of Plano traditions.
The Folsom discovery’s lasting outcome was not just a point style, but a change in scientific understanding: humans were shown to be contemporaneous with late Ice Age animals in North America. Later finds of Clovis and pre-Clovis sites expanded the story, but Folsom remained a foundational proof point for the deep antiquity of people in the Americas.
