In southern Chile, locals found a mastodon bone near Chinchihuapi Creek, drawing scientific attention to what became the Monte Verde site. This discovery set in motion excavations that would later challenge the long-dominant idea that the first widely accepted Americans were associated with Clovis technology in North America.
Archaeologist Tom Dillehay began multi-year excavations at Monte Verde, carefully documenting sediments, artifacts, plant remains, and animal bones. The work aimed to establish whether the material was truly human-made and securely dated—two requirements for claims of very early occupation.
Excavations revealed a well-preserved occupation area now called Monte Verde II (MV-II), including a long, tent-like wooden structure with internal compartments and hearth features. Unusually for such an old site, many organic materials (wood, plant remains, cordage) survived because they were sealed in wet, peat-forming sediments.
By the late 1980s, portions of Monte Verde were disturbed by later land use, including bulldozing. This increased the pressure on researchers to rely on already-excavated materials, detailed field records, and independent review to confirm the site’s integrity and dates.
As findings were reported, Monte Verde was argued to be older than the Clovis horizon recognized in North America. Because Clovis had long been treated as the earliest well-established human presence in the Americas, an older South American site forced researchers to reconsider migration timing and routes.
A central part of the Monte Verde argument came from radiocarbon results for MV-II. Reported radiocarbon ages clustered around roughly 12,700–12,000 radiocarbon years before present (rcbp), which calibrate to about 14,500–14,000 calendar years BP (cal BP). This is the core of the widely cited ~14,600–13,500 BP (approximate) occupation window discussed in peopling-of-the-Americas debates.
Dillehay’s final reports compiled the site’s geology, environmental setting, artifacts, and radiocarbon record in major published volumes. These publications made it possible for other specialists to evaluate the evidence in detail rather than relying on short summaries or conference claims.
A group of leading Paleoindian specialists visited Monte Verde, inspected collections, and evaluated remaining exposures. Their assessment supported MV-II as a genuine human occupation that predates Clovis, while urging caution about the much older and less clear lower component (often called MV-I).
After broader acceptance began, critics and supporters focused on what counted as strong proof: clear human-made artifacts, secure stratigraphic context, and radiocarbon samples closely tied to human activity (like hearth charcoal or worked wood). The Monte Verde discussion became a model for how pre-Clovis claims are tested and either strengthened or rejected.
Later work used additional radiocarbon measurements from sediments that overlie and seal the MV-II occupation surface. These analyses helped narrow the timing of peat formation and reinforced that the occupation occurred immediately before sealing, supporting a chronology centered around ~14,550 cal BP.
Because Monte Verde is far south and dates to well before the classic Clovis horizon, it is difficult to explain with a very late, rapid movement only through an interior “ice-free corridor.” In peopling-of-the-Americas research, MV-II is therefore often cited as evidence consistent with earlier dispersal, including movement along Pacific coastal environments.
Today Monte Verde II is widely treated as one of the strongest pre-Clovis sites because its occupation layer is tied to multiple radiocarbon measurements and is supported by well-preserved features and organic remains. The site’s radiocarbon record—often summarized as roughly the mid–14,000s cal BP—continues to shape how archaeologists evaluate other early sites and build broader timelines for the first peopling of the Americas.
