These cave sites show how mobile hunter-gatherers used sheltered places to cope with wind, cold nights, and thin air while accessing highland resources. They help explain how highland settlement could become routine through repeated seasonal use.
Radiocarbon evidence synthesized for Peru indicates early highland occupations in the Lauricocha area in the early Holocene (with reported ranges around 11,600–10,200 cal BP for Lauricocha). This matters because it shows that several high-elevation zones—not just one basin—were being visited and used within a few thousand years of initial entry into South America.
At Asana (about 3,430 meters elevation) in southern Peru, archaeological evidence indicates human use going back to about 10,500 BP. The site is important because it illustrates how groups could combine highland hunting with living in river valleys, supporting flexible movement across elevations.
By roughly 9,000–8,000 BP, puna cave sequences show many stacked occupation layers, consistent with repeated returns over long periods. This pattern suggests people were learning where water, game, and raw materials were most reliable at high altitude, turning difficult terrain into a predictable part of their annual rounds.
High-altitude sites show toolmaking, hunting, and other daily tasks, not just brief scouting. This broader activity suggests camps supported longer stays and more varied work at elevation.
Soro Mik'aya Patjxa, near the Lake Titicaca Basin, is described as a seasonal residential site reused by hunter-gatherers over more than a thousand years. Its reported occupation span (about 8,000 to 6,700 BP) shows that repeated residence at high altitude was well established by the mid-to-late Archaic. This helps bridge earlier exploratory use and later, more settled highland lifeways.
Evidence from Telarmachay in the central Andes tracks a long sequence of human–camelid interaction. A 2026 synthesis reports intensification of vicuña herd management at Telarmachay between about 6.4–6.0 and 5.8–4.5 thousand years BP. This is a major transition because it points toward herding behaviors that later became central to Andean highland economies.
Across multiple highland regions, archaeological sequences show increasing reliance on high-altitude game (especially camelids) and repeated use of favored camps and shelters. This suggests that knowledge of puna ecology—weather windows, animal movements, and fuel sources—was being passed on and refined over many generations. Over time, these adaptations reduced the need to depend mainly on lower elevations.
By the end of the 14,000–6,000 BP window, the Andes had a long record of repeated high-elevation occupation, specialized hunting, and early forms of camelid management. These developments created the conditions for later highland economies where herding, longer-term settlements, and wider exchange networks became more important. In other words, early adaptations turned extreme altitude from a barrier into a lived-in landscape.
