New excavations at the Vaito‘otia–Fa‘ahia site (Huahine, Society Islands) produced short-lived radiocarbon samples indicating initial occupation about 1050–1160 CE. These kinds of well-controlled dates help anchor the timeline for outward movement into nearby island groups.
With the Society Islands established, Polynesian navigators expanded into the low coral atolls of the Tuamotus, a different environment than high volcanic islands. Settlement required careful water management, reef and lagoon food harvesting, and flexible community organization suited to small land areas.
