After World War II, Siemens had lost most of its assets and had to restart operations under difficult conditions. The company relied on a decentralized structure, with leadership and major operations split across cities such as Munich and Erlangen. This rebuilding phase set the foundation for Siemens’ later return to international markets.
As restrictions on German foreign trade eased from 1948, Siemens gradually resumed overseas business. The company used this opening to rebuild its presence beyond Germany, preparing for broader global expansion in the 1950s and 1960s.
Siemens formalized its postwar leadership locations: Munich became headquarters for Siemens & Halske and Erlangen for Siemens-Schuckertwerke, with Berlin kept as a second headquarters city. This arrangement reflected both the realities of postwar Germany and Siemens’ effort to keep major business lines operating. It also supported later consolidation into a single corporate structure.
From 1952 to 1962, Siemens founded or rebuilt companies, agencies, and representative offices in 30 countries, focusing especially on Europe and South America. By fiscal year 1956/57, exports accounted for about a quarter of Siemens’ revenue. These steps marked Siemens’ shift from national rebuilding to sustained multinational growth.
Siemens created Siemens Electrogeräte AG to combine its home electronics and home appliance activities during West Germany’s high-growth “economic miracle” period. This move broadened Siemens’ product portfolio beyond heavy electrical engineering and supported scale in consumer markets. It also foreshadowed later collaboration with other industrial firms.
Siemens AG was founded through the legal and organizational absorption of Siemens & Halske, Siemens-Schuckertwerke, and Siemens-Reiniger-Werke. The reorganization aimed to create a more effective corporate structure and unify previously separate business lines. This consolidation made it easier for Siemens to compete and invest at global scale.
Siemens and Bosch combined their home appliance operations in a joint venture, Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH). The partnership responded to increased competition by pooling manufacturing and product development. It also showed Siemens’ growing use of alliances to expand markets efficiently.
Siemens and AEG formed Kraftwerk Union (KWU) to market and build complete power stations, including nuclear and fossil-fuel plants. KWU became closely associated with Siemens’ power-generation business and supported international project delivery. This was part of Siemens’ broader push into large global infrastructure systems.
Siemens reorganized its operating groups to better match increasingly global markets and faster technological change. The company defined major groups such as components, data systems, power engineering, telecommunications, and medical engineering. This structure supported coordinated management across products, regions, and international subsidiaries.
For the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Siemens served as an official supplier for telecommunications and data processing. High-visibility projects like this helped Siemens build credibility in complex, integrated systems rather than only standalone equipment. That reputation supported further global contracting in infrastructure and communications.
AEG exited the KWU partnership, and Siemens acquired AEG’s 50% share. Siemens’ full control strengthened its ability to plan and execute global power-plant projects under one management. The change also reflected how Siemens increasingly preferred direct control in core strategic businesses.
Siemens acquired a majority stake in Nixdorf Computer AG and merged it with its own data and information technology unit to create Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (SNI). The deal aimed to strengthen Siemens’ position in computer technology as business computing expanded globally. It also added integration and restructuring challenges that Siemens had to manage through the 1990s.
Through deals with IBM, Siemens expanded its role in the Rolm telecommunications business, culminating in Siemens buying IBM’s remaining stake and becoming the sole owner. This strengthened Siemens’ footprint in private communications systems, especially in the U.S. market. The move fits Siemens’ diversification strategy: combining acquisitions with technology and service operations to grow globally.
Siemens established Siemens Business Services (SBS) as a dedicated organization for IT and business-related services. This signaled a shift toward service-based revenue alongside manufacturing, reflecting how multinational corporations were increasingly selling solutions, not just equipment. By 1995, Siemens had evolved into a diversified global company spanning power, communications, computing, and medical technology.
