Dutch forces captured Recife and nearby areas in Pernambuco (Brazil), then the world’s richest sugar-producing region. Control over Brazilian sugar and its trade routes showed how European wars and naval power could reshape commodity markets. It also highlighted how sugar profits were linked to wider Atlantic competition.
In the 1640s, planters in Barbados rapidly moved from mixed farming toward sugarcane grown for export. This “sugar revolution” favored large estates, expensive mills, and coerced labor, tying the island’s economy to Atlantic shipping, credit, and overseas markets. It became a model that spread to other Caribbean colonies.
England’s 1651 Navigation Act aimed to channel colonial commerce through English ships and ports, limiting rivals such as the Dutch. These mercantilist rules helped structure sugar as an “imperial” commodity—grown in colonies, carried by approved shipping, and sold within regulated markets. Later acts expanded and reinforced this system.
In 1660, England reenacted and strengthened navigation rules and began “enumerating” certain colonial products. Sugar was among the listed goods, meaning it generally had to be shipped within the English imperial system rather than freely traded to foreign markets. This tightened the link between plantation output and imperial policy.
The English Royal African Company was chartered in 1672, supporting a more organized transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans to the Americas. For sugar colonies, this mattered because plantation production demanded large, controlled labor forces. The company’s growth strengthened the connection between sugar profits, forced migration, and Atlantic finance.
The 1697 Treaty of Ryswick ceded the western third of Hispaniola from Spain to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. Over time, Saint-Domingue developed into a plantation colony that produced major export crops—especially sugar—using enslaved labor. This helped make the French Caribbean central to Atlantic commodity trade.
In 1713, the Peace of Utrecht gave Britain an asiento (contract) to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish America for 30 years. The deal was administered through the South Sea Company and expanded Britain’s role in slave trading connected to plantation economies. It also encouraged legal trade and illicit smuggling around Spanish ports.
Britain’s 1733 Molasses Act taxed molasses, sugar, and rum imported into North American colonies from non-British Caribbean producers. The goal was to protect British West Indian planters and keep trade inside the empire. In practice, widespread smuggling showed how hard it was to police Atlantic sugar and rum commerce.
The Treaty of Paris (1763) ended the Seven Years’ War and rearranged colonial holdings, including several Caribbean islands. The negotiations underscored how valuable sugar colonies were: decision-makers weighed them against other territories because sugar generated large revenues. The postwar map influenced who controlled key plantation zones and trade routes.
Beginning in 1791, a massive uprising and revolutionary conflict in Saint-Domingue undermined the world’s leading sugar plantation complex. Violence, war, and the collapse of slave-based plantation control disrupted production and trade links that had supplied European markets. The shock helped shift investment and expansion toward other sugar regions.
On 1804-01-01, Haiti declared independence, marking the end of French colonial rule in Saint-Domingue. The new state emerged from the only successful large-scale slave revolt in the Atlantic world, intensifying fear of similar uprisings elsewhere. Haiti’s break also accelerated sugar’s geographic shift, as other colonies expanded to fill supply gaps.
Britain’s Slavery Abolition Act received Royal Assent in 1833 and took effect on 1834-08-01, ending slavery in most of the British Empire but imposing an “apprenticeship” labor transition for many formerly enslaved people. Apprenticeship ended early in 1838, bringing full emancipation in the British Caribbean. These changes weakened the old plantation labor model and reshaped how sugar was produced, financed, and justified in British trade.
In 1846, Parliament passed the Sugar Duties Acts, equalizing import duties for sugar from Britain’s colonies. This policy shift signaled a move away from older protectionist preferences that had supported certain plantation producers. It marked a late-stage transition in the Atlantic sugar economy toward freer-trade rules and new competitive pressures.
