The Qing court tightened controls on European commerce by limiting most Western trade to the port of Guangzhou (Canton), later known as the Canton System. Trade had to be handled through approved Chinese merchant groups under close official supervision. These rules shaped the setting in which opium later became a major source of conflict.
In Bengal’s neighboring Bihar, the English East India Company (EIC) established an opium monopoly under Warren Hastings. The EIC used contractors and later more direct oversight to control production and purchasing from cultivators. This created a large, organized supply of opium that could be sold for revenue.
By the early 1780s, British sales of Indian opium into China were underway and began increasing. Opium provided a way for British-linked traders to obtain value in Asia at a time when China demanded silver for tea and other goods. This growth set the stage for opium becoming a central commodity in regional trade.
The East India Company expanded an auction system in Calcutta (Kolkata) that sold opium to private traders. Because importing opium into China was illegal, this structure helped the Company profit while keeping the final smuggling step at arm’s length. The result was a durable pipeline from Indian cultivation to China’s coast.
The Qing state repeatedly tried to stop opium entering China, reaffirming prohibitions in the late 1700s. However, enforcement was difficult because smuggling networks could operate along the coast while legal foreign trade stayed concentrated at Guangzhou. The gap between law and practice widened as the drug trade grew.
After abuses under contractor arrangements (such as adulteration and coercion concerns), authorities moved toward taking opium production more directly into state hands within British India. This administrative tightening strengthened quality control and revenue collection. A more reliable supply further fueled the scale of exports toward China.
In the early 1830s, William Jardine and James Matheson founded Jardine, Matheson & Co. in Canton (Guangzhou). Firms like this became influential “country traders,” profiting from high-volume opium traffic alongside other commodities. Their growing role reflected a shift from a single-company system toward more competitive British private trade.
Parliament abolished the East India Company’s last major trading monopoly in the China tea trade, opening commerce to other British merchants. The change increased the number of private traders in the Canton trade environment and complicated how Britain managed disputes with Qing officials. This shift also helped opium-linked trading firms gain more influence.
In 1834, Lord Napier arrived as Britain’s Chief Superintendent of Trade and attempted more direct contact with Chinese officials. Qing authorities insisted on the established Canton System channels, including the role of the Cohong merchants, and pushed back against Napier’s approach. The dispute increased distrust and hardened attitudes on both sides.
After years of unsuccessful enforcement, the Daoguang Emperor appointed Lin Zexu as imperial commissioner with extraordinary powers to stop opium trafficking. Lin traveled to Guangzhou, the center of foreign trade, and began aggressive measures against merchants and Chinese collaborators. His appointment marked a decisive escalation in Qing anti-opium policy.
Lin Zexu seized large quantities of opium from foreign merchants and oversaw its destruction at Humen over several weeks starting in early June 1839. The action was meant to enforce Chinese law and deter future smuggling, but it also triggered political outrage in Britain and demands for compensation. This became a direct pathway to armed conflict.
Britain launched major military operations and captured Zhoushan (Chusan) in July 1840. The seizure aimed to pressure the Qing government by threatening strategic coastal positions and trade routes. It showed that the dispute over opium and trade rules had become a full-scale war.
British and Qing negotiators drafted the Convention of Chuenpi in January 1841 as a proposed settlement, including provisions tied to territory and trade. Both governments rejected it, dismissing their negotiators and continuing the war. The failure highlighted how far apart the two sides were on sovereignty, trade access, and compensation.
In July 1842, British forces captured Zhenjiang (Chinkiang), a key point controlling access between the Yangtze River and the Grand Canal. The loss threatened Qing supply lines and increased pressure to negotiate. This battle was one of the final military turning points before peace talks.
The Treaty of Nanjing ended the First Opium War and forced major changes in how Britain could trade with China. China ceded Hong Kong, paid a large indemnity, and opened five ports to British commerce, undermining the old Canton System. These terms marked a new era of unequal treaty relations and permanently altered the trade framework that had enabled the opium boom.
