Portugal and Castile (Spain) signed the Treaty of Tordesillas to reduce rivalry over Atlantic exploration by drawing a line that split future conquests into separate spheres. This diplomatic framework mattered later because Portugal used it to justify focusing on Africa and an ocean route to Asia. It helped set the political backdrop for a Portuguese drive into the Indian Ocean spice trade.
Vasco da Gama arrived at Calicut (Kozhikode) on India’s Malabar Coast, completing the first direct sea voyage from Europe to India around Africa. This breakthrough opened a practical ocean route that bypassed older overland and Red Sea routes that had long been dominated by other trading powers. It marked the starting point for Portugal’s sustained effort to build an Indian Ocean trading empire.
Portugal developed the cartaz system, a pass or license that ships were expected to carry in order to trade in areas where the Portuguese navy claimed control. This policy aimed to tax commerce and restrict rivals by turning naval power into an administrative tool. It became one of the main ways Portugal tried to shape Indian Ocean trade without conquering large inland territories.
King Manuel I appointed Francisco de Almeida as the first viceroy in 1505, and Portugal formally organized its Asian possessions and fortified ports as the Estado da Índia. This created a central command structure (based in Portuguese India) to manage fleets, fortifications, and trade across East Africa, the Arabian Sea, and parts of South and Southeast Asia. The new system helped Portugal move from voyages to permanent maritime presence.
A Portuguese fleet defeated a coalition that included Mamluk and Gujarati forces at the Battle of Diu, a major naval clash off western India. The victory strengthened Portugal’s ability to protect its shipping lanes and enforce its demands on maritime trade. It helped Portugal consolidate influence along key routes connecting the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian ports.
Afonso de Albuquerque captured Goa in December 1510 and developed it as a major administrative and commercial center for Portuguese Asia. Goa’s deep-water port and fortifications supported fleets that could reach the Arabian Sea and beyond. As a capital of Portuguese power in the region, it became a key node linking military control and trade profits.
Portuguese forces under Albuquerque took Malacca, a strategic port controlling the Strait of Malacca. Controlling this choke point mattered because it helped Portugal influence shipping between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The conquest extended Portuguese maritime networks from India toward Southeast Asian spice routes.
Portugal moved to dominate the entrance to the Persian Gulf by establishing control over Hormuz and building a fortress there. From this position, Portuguese authorities could pressure or tax shipping linking the Gulf to India and East Africa. Hormuz became a major pillar of Portuguese strategy to control trade routes through fortified ports.
Portugal gained the right to build a fortress at Diu after an agreement with the Sultan of Gujarat, turning the island into another fortified trading post on India’s west coast. The fort helped protect Portuguese shipping and provided a base near major commercial routes in the Arabian Sea. It also drew Portugal deeper into regional conflicts as other powers tried to remove this new stronghold.
Ottoman and Gujarati forces besieged Diu for months but ultimately failed to capture it in 1546. The defense showed how Portuguese fortifications, naval supply lines, and reinforcements could hold key ports even when heavily attacked. Keeping Diu helped Portugal maintain its chain of bases along the western Indian Ocean.
After a succession crisis, Portugal entered a dynastic union with Spain (the Iberian Union), placing Portuguese overseas holdings under rulers who were also Spain’s monarchs. This shift mattered in the Indian Ocean because Portugal’s enemies increasingly included Spain’s enemies, expanding the number of powerful rivals targeting Portuguese routes and forts. The period helped set conditions for wider attacks by Dutch and English competitors.
Portugal built Fort Jesus at Mombasa (1593–1596) to protect the port and reinforce its position on the Swahili Coast. The fort was meant to secure shipping and logistics along routes between Mozambique, the Red Sea approaches, and India. It reflects how the empire relied on coastal fortresses to defend long-distance maritime trade networks.
The English East India Company defeated Portuguese forces off Suvali (near Surat) in late 1612. The battle weakened Portugal’s ability to intimidate new European entrants in Indian waters. It also supported English efforts to gain trading privileges and establish a stronger presence on India’s west coast.
Safavid Persian forces, aided by the English East India Company, captured Hormuz after a siege in 1622. Losing Hormuz removed a key Portuguese stronghold that had helped control trade entering and leaving the Persian Gulf. This marked a major turning point: Portugal’s fortified network was no longer secure against coordinated regional and European challengers.
The Dutch East India Company (VOC), allied with Johor, besieged and captured Portuguese Malacca in early 1641. This defeat cut Portugal off from one of its most strategic Southeast Asian bases and weakened its ability to shape trade through the Strait of Malacca. The loss also illustrates a broader pattern: Dutch naval power and alliances were steadily dismantling Portuguese positions across the Indian Ocean world.
By 1658, Dutch forces had captured key remaining Portuguese positions in Sri Lanka, and the Portuguese coastal regime there collapsed. This outcome mattered because Sri Lanka’s ports and cinnamon-producing regions were important parts of Indian Ocean commerce. The fall of Portuguese Ceylon shows the broader end-state of this era: Portugal retained some bases (like Goa), but its earlier maritime dominance across the Indian Ocean network had been decisively reduced.
