In 1565, the navigator Andrés de Urdaneta charted the tornaviaje, a return route from the Philippines to New Spain (Mexico) using northern winds and currents. This solved the main barrier to regular two-way crossings of the Pacific. It made a repeating Manila–Acapulco shipping circuit practical and profitable.
In 1571, Spanish forces under Miguel López de Legazpi established Manila as the colony’s main administrative center. A stable capital and fortified port supported regular transpacific sailings and the storage, taxation, and resale of imported goods. Manila’s role as a hub tied Asian merchants and Spanish colonial institutions directly to the galleon trade system.
By 1581, Spanish authorities had created the Parián, a designated market and residential area near Intramuros for many Chinese merchants and artisans (often called sangley in Spanish sources). This concentrated commercial activity in a controllable space near the port. The Parián helped Manila function as a large-scale exchange point where Asian goods could be assembled for shipment to Acapulco.
On 4 November 1587, the English privateer Thomas Cavendish seized the Manila galleon Santa Ana near Cabo San Lucas. The capture showed that the galleons carried extremely valuable cargo—and were vulnerable at sea despite their size. This helped drive later efforts to strengthen defenses and manage risk on the route.
In 1593, the Spanish Crown imposed tighter controls on the trade, including limits that effectively restricted participation to a small number of ships and capped the declared value of Asian goods shipped to Acapulco. These rules aimed to control smuggling and protect other Spanish trading interests. The regulations also reinforced the galleon trade as a state-managed monopoly with strong political influence.
In 1594, Spanish authorities established Binondo as a settlement for Chinese converts to Catholicism across the river from Intramuros. This created a long-term community closely linked to Manila’s commercial life. The settlement supported the labor, credit, and supply networks that helped keep the galleon trade operating year after year.
In 1603, violence erupted in Manila involving segments of the Chinese community and Spanish colonial forces, culminating in a major crackdown. The episode highlighted how dependent Manila’s economy was on Chinese merchants and skilled workers, even as Spanish authorities tried to restrict and monitor them. In the long run, trade continued, but with heightened controls and recurring tensions.
On 22 December 1709, the British privateer Woodes Rogers captured the Manila galleon Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación y Desengaño near Cabo San Lucas. The event showed that European rivals could intercept the route near the American coast. It also reinforced the need for escorts, timing strategies, and armed defenses on transpacific voyages.
On 20 June 1743, Britain’s HMS Centurion under George Anson captured the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Covadonga near the Philippines. This was a high-profile strike against the route’s wealth and reputation for security. Such losses increased financial risk and fed debates inside the Spanish Empire about reforming the trade system.
From late September to early October 1762, British forces captured Manila during the Seven Years’ War. The occupation disrupted Spanish administration and threatened the flow of goods and silver tied to the galleon trade. The crisis underscored how global warfare could directly interrupt Pacific commerce and colonial finances.
In 1785, Spain established the Royal Company of the Philippines to promote direct commerce between the Philippines and Spain and to reorganize colonial trade. While the Manila–Acapulco galleons continued, the company reflected a broader shift toward reform and diversification. Over time, these changes weakened the galleon system’s unique monopoly position.
In 1813, Spanish authorities decreed the suppression of the Manila–Acapulco galleon route. The decision reflected wartime disruptions, shifting trade policies, and the weakening of Spanish control in New Spain. It set a formal endpoint for a system that had connected Asian goods and American silver across the Pacific for generations.
During the Mexican War of Independence, insurgent campaigns increasingly threatened key Pacific ports. In 1813, rebel forces took the city of Acapulco after a siege, disrupting Spanish control over the galleons’ main American endpoint. With Acapulco unstable, the Manila–Acapulco trade became difficult to sustain as a regular system.
In 1815, a final Manila galleon voyage reached Acapulco, commonly treated as the practical end of the Manila–Acapulco trade. After this, the long-running route no longer functioned as a regular annual exchange linking Manila and New Spain. The end marked a major shift in Pacific trade, as colonial-era monopoly shipping gave way to new political and commercial realities.
