Babur defeated Sultan Ibrahim Lodi at Panipat, opening the way for Mughal rule in North India. This political shift mattered for trade because imperial control over the Indo-Gangetic Plain helped stabilize major inland routes. The Grand Trunk Road corridor later served as a key spine connecting towns, markets, and river crossings used by merchants and officials.
Sher Shah Suri defeated the Mughal emperor Humayun at Chausa, a turning point that weakened Mughal control in the east. Control over Bihar and nearby river routes mattered because they linked overland traffic to Ganges-based transport and regional markets. The victory set the stage for Sur rule and major road-and-revenue reforms that supported commerce.
During Sher Shah’s short reign, the Sur state rebuilt and extended a major imperial highway later known as the Grand Trunk Road, described as running from Sonargaon (in Bengal) to Peshawar. The government supported travel with roadside infrastructure such as trees, wells, and sarais (rest houses), and tied many of these stops to administration. This strengthened long-distance inland trade by making journeys safer, faster, and more predictable for merchants and caravans.
At Kannauj (also called Bilgram), Sher Shah again defeated Humayun, forcing the Mughals out and consolidating Sur power in North India. With a stronger central state, the Sur administration could invest in safer, more reliable movement of people and goods. This created favorable conditions for rebuilding and standardizing major inland routes.
Sur-era road building was paired with an organized dak (postal relay) system using staging points along highways. Sarais functioned as protected stopping places and helped concentrate services (lodging, water, and official oversight) that benefited both state messengers and private travelers. These measures effectively turned the highway network into an “all-weather” backbone for information flow and commercial movement across northern India.
Milestone towers known as Kos Minars were introduced along major routes associated with the Grand Trunk Road system, serving as distance markers for travelers and administrators. Standard distance marking improved coordination for state movement (messengers, escorts, inspections) and helped merchants plan travel time and costs. Over time, these markers became part of the visible infrastructure of north Indian inland communications.
After Humayun’s death, the young Akbar’s forces defeated Hemu at the Second Battle of Panipat. This victory secured Delhi and Agra for the Mughals and restarted Mughal consolidation in North India. A more stable imperial center supported the inland trade corridors that linked the capital region to Punjab, the Ganges plain, and Bengal.
Aurangzeb died on March 3, 1707, and the empire soon faced renewed succession struggles and growing regional autonomy. This mattered for inland trade because weakened central authority often meant less consistent security and more contested taxation along roads and river crossings. Long-distance merchants increasingly had to navigate multiple local powers rather than one strong imperial system.
The British East India Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal and his allies at Plassey on June 23, 1757. Because Bengal was one of the richest regions in South Asia, this victory shifted control over revenues and trade policy toward a European corporate-military power. The change began to redirect how inland trade surpluses were taxed, financed, and enforced, affecting networks connected to Bengal’s river and road links.
From 1758 to 1761, war between the Marathas and Ahmad Shah Durrani’s forces brought large-scale campaigning to Punjab and the Delhi region. Military movements, requisitioning, and insecurity along major corridors could interrupt caravan traffic and raise transport costs. The conflict culminated in a major battlefield decision at Panipat, near a key junction on the north Indian road system.
On January 14, 1761, Ahmad Shah Durrani defeated the Maratha army at the Third Battle of Panipat. The outcome halted the Marathas’ attempt to dominate the Mughal heartland and further exposed the weakness of Mughal-era political structures. For inland trade, the battle’s aftermath contributed to instability and power shifts along the Grand Trunk Road corridor and nearby market towns.
The East India Company defeated an alliance including Mughal and regional forces at Buxar on October 22, 1764. This victory confirmed Company dominance in Bengal and Bihar and made it harder to rule through a nominally independent local court. With revenue power increasingly concentrated in Company hands, the fiscal foundations of Mughal inland trade networks (customs points, escorts, and official road services) shifted toward a new colonial state model.
On August 16, 1765, the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II signed the Treaty of Allahabad with the East India Company. The treaty granted the Company diwani rights—authority to collect revenue—in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa on the emperor’s behalf. This marked a clear closing outcome for the 1526–1761 story: the inland trade-and-tax systems once anchored by the Mughal imperial road network were increasingly subordinated to Company revenue extraction and administration.
