A major silver-and-gold discovery in Nevada drew thousands of miners and investors, helping create boom towns such as Virginia City. During the Civil War, Congress and President Abraham Lincoln backed a transcontinental railroad to link the Missouri River region with the Pacific Coast. The law provided federal loans and large land grants to railroad companies, shaping where tracks were built and where new towns would form. This set the policy foundation for rapid railroad-led economic expansion in the West.
The Union Pacific Railroad was incorporated under the same 1862 law and began organizing to build west across the plains and Rocky Mountain region. The project connected eastern capital, federal subsidies, and on-the-ground construction into one system. Its advance encouraged new settlements and demand for materials, food, and services along the route.
After receiving federal support, the Central Pacific Railroad started construction in Sacramento to push tracks across the Sierra Nevada. Rail crews of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific met at Promontory Summit, Utah Territory, and held a ceremony to mark the connection. A ceremonial “last spike” event near Gold Creek, Montana, marked completion of the Northern Pacific’s main line across the northern tier. The railroad supported mining, timber, farming, and tourism by providing a major new route to the Pacific Northwest. It also intensified pressures on Indigenous lands and resources as settlement and extraction expanded.
Federal policy shifted toward allotting reservation land to individuals and opening much remaining land to non-Native settlement. This reduced tribal control over territory and helped create conditions for more railroad building, mining, and farming on lands taken from Indigenous nations. The result was large-scale land loss and long-term social and economic disruption for many Native communities.
