Labels: Yakutsk, Lena River, YasakBy the early 1640s, Yakutsk on the Lena River was a key Russian outpost for collecting yasak (fur tribute) and launching Cossack-led exploration deeper into eastern Siberia. Russian officials and Cossacks used the region’s river networks as “highways” to push toward new lands and resources. This frontier setting shaped the decision to probe routes south toward the Amur basin.
