In spring 1649, Yerofey (Erofey) Khabarov set out from Yakutsk at his own expense to find a workable route into the Amur River basin. The earlier route used by explorer Vassili Poyarkov had been so difficult that it limited follow-up settlement and raiding. Khabarov’s journey mattered because it aimed to turn reconnaissance into a repeatable supply and travel corridor for Cossack forces.
By early 1650, Khabarov reached the upper Amur region known in Russian sources as Dauria, inhabited by Daur communities and linked to wider Manchu influence. He found much of the country “nearly deserted,” reflecting how local people could relocate in anticipation of raids and tribute demands. This first entry into the Amur basin set the stage for later fort-building and conflict over control of people and resources.
In May 1650, Khabarov returned to Yakutsk and reported that he had pioneered a better approach route into the Amur basin. He praised the land’s potential and warned that Manchu (Qing) intervention was likely if Russians tried to hold the area. The report helped justify sending a larger armed expedition rather than a small trading or scouting party.
Because communication with Moscow was slow, the Yakutsk voivode (governor) Dmitry Frantsbekov decided to act on his own initiative and backed a second expedition. Khabarov was sent back with more men and official letters urging local leaders to submit and pay tribute. This shift—from private exploration to semi-official coercion—marked a turning point toward military conquest and administration.
By late 1650, Khabarov’s men built winter quarters at Albazin on the north bank of the Amur, using or taking over an existing Daur site. Albazin became an early Russian foothold and a symbol of intent to stay, not just raid. Later clashes over the Amur would repeatedly return to the question of whether Russians could hold fortified posts like Albazin against Qing power.
After establishing a base, Khabarov’s campaign pushed down the Amur to reach more densely settled, grain-producing areas. Food and fodder were critical: Cossack detachments could not remain in the region without reliable local production or tribute deliveries. This supply logic helped drive continued fort-building and raids, escalating conflict with local communities and Qing-linked authorities.
On March 24, 1652, Khabarov’s forces fought at Achansky fort (often linked to an area near today’s Khabarovsk). The clash showed that Russian raids had triggered an armed response from Qing-aligned forces, not just local resistance. It also signaled that conflict in the Amur basin was becoming a wider border war rather than a series of isolated encounters.
In 1652, after Khabarov reached the mouth of the Zeya River, a large group of his men mutinied and left, reducing his effective force. The mutiny highlights the instability of long-distance Cossack expeditions: harsh conditions, disputes over loot and strategy, and fear of stronger enemies could fracture command. Reduced manpower made permanent occupation harder and increased reliance on coercive tribute-taking.
In fall 1653, a reinforcement force under Dmitry Zinoviev arrived, demanded command, and arrested Khabarov when he refused. Khabarov’s removal showed that authority in the frontier could be contested even among Russians, especially when a noble officer challenged a Cossack leader. The leadership crisis weakened Russia’s short-term position on the Amur and set up a new phase under different commanders.
After Khabarov’s departure, Onufriy Stepanov took charge of remaining Cossack forces and continued operations on the Amur. His detachments sought food and materials, often by demanding yasak (tribute) from local peoples, which further deepened hostility. This continuity mattered because it kept the conflict alive and ensured the Qing would treat the Russians as a persistent military problem.
On April 27, 1654, Stepanov’s flotilla fought Qing forces with Joseon (Korean) musketeers at the Battle of Hutong on the Songhua River. The engagement demonstrated that the Qing could coordinate allies and conduct river warfare to contest Russian movement and supply. For the broader story of Khabarov’s campaign, it underscored that the Amur frontier was becoming an international military theater.
In 1689, Russia and the Qing signed the Treaty of Nerchinsk, the first formal treaty between the two states, after years of fighting that included sieges around Albazin. Russia agreed to withdraw from the Amur region north of the river up to the Stanovoy Range, while securing other border terms and trade possibilities. As a closing outcome, the treaty marked the failure of the mid-1600s Cossack conquest strategy in the Amur basin that Khabarov helped launch.
