Stroganov charter opens route beyond Urals
Labels: Stroganov family, Kama RiverIn 1558, Tsar Ivan IV (“Ivan the Terrible”) granted the Stroganov merchant family major privileges and land rights in the Kama River region near the Urals. This helped private investors finance forts, armed guards, and trade contacts that supported eastward expansion. The search for high-value furs helped turn Siberia into a strategic economic frontier for the Russian state.
