Yakutsk (Lensky Ostrog) founded on Lena
Labels: Yakutsk, Pyotr BeketovIn 1632 Russian Cossacks led by Pyotr Beketov founded a fortified outpost (an ostrog) on the Lena River, the settlement that became Yakutsk. The fort gave Russia a permanent base in the middle Lena region, making it easier to collect tribute and send expeditions farther northeast. For nearby Sakha (Yakut) communities, this marked the start of sustained Russian political and military pressure.
