ISO introduced ISO 668 to classify and standardize intermodal freight container dimensions and ratings. The container ship Ever Given ran aground and blocked the Suez Canal, disrupting global schedules and showing how vulnerable trade is to single-route failures. While this happened in a different canal, it reinforced why carriers and shippers value route diversity and reliable alternatives. Events like this can temporarily shift routing decisions and capacity pressure among major trade corridors, including Panama.
During a severe drought, ACP reduced the maximum number of ships allowed to transit per day, reflecting the canal’s dependence on freshwater to run its lock system. Fewer transits and draft limits can raise shipping costs, cause delays, and push some cargo to reroute or reschedule. The episode underscored that, even after expansion, water availability can be a binding constraint on canal capacity in a warming climate.

The reports highlighted growing use of mid-to-large container ships sized to fit the canal’s post-expansion capabilities, reflecting how carrier networks adapt to both lock dimensions and market conditions. Industry reporting in 2025 described ACP indicating improved water conditions, with operational status stabilizing compared with the 2023–2024 drought period. Even with better water levels, reported average daily transits were still not fully back to earlier levels, suggesting lingering operational and demand adjustments. This points to a lasting reality: Panama’s role in container trade depends not only on ship size (Panamax/Neopanamax) but also on climate-driven operating limits.
